“A wonderful, personal, unique Indian experience”
Reviewed November 1, 2012 via mobile

I stayed at GK riverview for 4 nights and it was the most relaxing and peacful 4 days of my trip. It was so nice to stay in a Keralan village and get a slice of the way of life and see the lives of the locals on the riverbanks on the lovely canoe ride. George was so attentive and caring and really welcomed me into his home. His wife Dai cooked amazing keralan food and it was nice to eat in their home every day and I never felt unwelcome or like I was intruding. They really looked after me. I loved the hammock overlooking the rice field and managed to switch off and read a lot. I really recommend gk if you want a good mix of relaxation and want to experience a traditional Indian village and beautiful backwaters which hasn't been affected by tourism.

I really loved staying at Georges home stay for 3 nights. It was a change from the hustle and bustle of the cities. While staying in this small village I got to experience the real calm rural India that no one believes exist.
George organized a canoe trip for us and we got to mosey a around the backwaters of the village. It was especially great because their weren't any flocks tourist around like in alleppy. On slightly lazier days you can read a book a hammock overlooking rice fields or go for a walk around the village. also, the food was amazing! The family shared with us the best traditional Kerala dishes and made sure we didn't leave the table hungry.
The best thing about Georges home stay is that most of his guest come to him by word of mouth. I got recommended here by a fellow traveler who sensed my distaste with the city, and I'm sure to recommend plenty of others in the future as well.

We stayed at GK Homestay for 4 nights in August 2012. It is located in the backwaters in the most tranquil and picturesque location. The rooms are clean and comfortable and have the most heavenly outlook over paddy fields. There is plenty of bird life around and the changing colours seen from the deck chairs on the verandah make for a very relaxing scene. George went out of his way to ensure we had a great local experience by arranging a canoe trip around the nearby canals and also by arranging for us to see the snake boat races in Alleppey with other guests at the time. Nothing was too much trouble for George and his lovely family. Breakfasts and dinner were prepared by his wife and were always delicious and plentiful. The highlight of our stay was being able to wander through the local villages and to gain a personal experience of backwater life.

George greeted us with a friendly 'welcome home' when our rickshaw arrived, and he spent our entire stay doing everything to make it feel just that. Incredibly attentive and helpful, George made sure our stay was exactly what we wanted it to be. With his family he prepared delicious - and hefty - breakfasts and suppers, while snacks and drinks arrived at our verandah with perfect timing. Our room was simple, clean and comfortable, with an outside area looking out across rice paddies. It's very quiet, and very relaxing. But if you want some activity, then definitely take a local canoe trip (arranged by George), see the Snake Boat races (in August) if you like boat rices, take a walk around the backwaters, and make either your journey there or back by public ferry. Take a tour of the George's garden too - an incredible array of spices and vegetables. Oh, and remember, you're staying with George and his family, and he knows everything there is to know about the history and the area. So make sure you ask him! Thanks George! We had a great time. I stayed at Gk's for two days and it was totally relaxing. The room was very clean and comfortable. There was a big bed and aircon (we did not need it because the room was always cool), the bathroom was western style with hot water. The best thing about the place is the terrace with the deck chairs and the view over the rice fields and oalm trees. It is so easy just to sit down and forget time. Very nice were the litttle things George thought of like candles, inscence sticks and mosquito coils to burn in the evening when you want to sit outside. And then of course there is George. He is a very warm and generous host. After we arrived he served us tea and delicious rice dumplings on our terrace, we did not need to move one finger! The food for breakfast and dinner was always plenty and very good. On our day of departure George even accompanied us to the station to make sure we got on the right train! I would visit again.

My partner and I stayed here late August. We heard of the place from a lady who happened to sit opposite us on the Kochin to Varkala train. After a few days in Varkala we rang George the owned of the Homestay, he organised the train tickets to Kottyam and arranged for a pick up at the Station.
The rooms are basic with simple furnishings. The costs included meals eaten at his house. Again the food was basic and simple. This was perfect for us. We went and saw the Snake Boat races and on another day caught the local ferry going towards Alleppey and return, (4 hours return costing 14 rupees each). The trip was a highlight, along with a canoe trip on the backwaters, ducking under trees and low foot bridges.
The accomm is in the middle of the backwaters, so take books etc.. to entertain yourself as there is nothing much around.
We only stayed a few nights but it was a delight for us. It wouldn't suit everybody.
George was extremely helpful, with local knowledge and organising trains to and from, plus the local trips.
We would stay again.

We stayed at George's for 2 nights on our recent trip to Kerala and what a wonderful experience it was. George and his family were extremely welcoming and George went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable during our stay. He arranged for us to be taken out in a canoe and also to see the local snakeboat, and provided a map so we could walk around the local paths, so we felt we really got to know what life on the backwaters was like. The rooms are basic but clean and comfortable-in fact the air conditioning unit was the best one we experienced in the whole of our trip! We ate our meals in the family house and the food was delicious Keralan home cooking. What we particularly enjoyed about the stay was the opportunity to chat to George about life on the backwaters so we got a real insight into life in this part of India.
The location is remote but very beautiful and tranquil- lots of birdwatching opportunities too!
If you want a "luxury stay" then this is not the place for you, but if you want a true Keralan backwater experience with charming and interesting hosts then GKs is definitely recommended. We hope we can return one day!
