Kalaketty Estate Homestay
Reviewed July 1, 2011

A beautiful house set in the owner's rubber plantation consisting of 2 beautiful large bedrooms with bathrooms in a private annex. The home cooked food is delicious and our host gave us a very informative tour of the plantation and also local village excursions.
Delightful place to stay, highly recommended

Staying here at Kalaketty Estate was supposed to be the highlight and the most exciting part of my trip to India as far as my plans were concerned. It was in fact the low point in my trip through Southern Indian which included many wonderful places in both Tamil Nadu and Kerala; and this stay of two nights only particularly made me feel very lonely and depressed. The owners of the estate made me feel like an alien.

I was expecting to spend time with the 'family' on the estate and instead had to endure the very demeaning encounters with the 'man' of the house at meal time with no other member of the family present; the whole thing was really weird! Here I was, a single woman, eating meals face-to-face with the man of the house (who was a total snob without any personality); oh how humiliating it all was. His wife and children at meals with his mother out in the kitchen area with the cook and his wife. I could hear the joy coming from those meals and wanted to be there with them; He was obviously a control freak as I was not to have anything to do with them and them with me? How weird. I had a horrible time in this place; the silence at meal times was deafening and the overall 'hospitality' was non-existent. The air was stifling; no air conditioning; no hair dryer; just really primitive as far as provisions. I was provided with a lovely room but gee ... the isolation and lack of interaction with anyone was just horrible. The 'man' of the house is an absolute control freak. The lady of the house is lovely but down-trodden. What an experience. Please dont go here. Its awful.. Oh; and the guy who is their 'cook' and slave for anyting they dont want to do has to be the best chef in all of Southern India. These people should be banned from 'home-stay'; its not a home-stay its a room where a paying person gets to stay and they really dont care. AWFUL! The only service is from Raj the poor fellow they have slaving over them and their visitors night and day. The food as prepared by Raj was unbelievable; particularly given my request for vegetarian. He was amazing ... but poor man; running around as though he had his tail between his legs because of that over-bearing man who ran the household. The wife wanted to sneak in a few conversations as well. Boy ... what a situation. You don't want to be there, seriously; very strange and very unpleasant.

Room Tip: Dont stay here; its awful.
