Henri's Anchorage Homestay
Reviewed April 23, 2008

From among hundreds of accommodations over many years, Henri's Anchorage Homestay ranks at or very near the top of my list of favorites. Henri's was recommended to us by a Lonely Planet-listed hotelier already full. What a blessing. My wife and I stayed at Henri's a total of 5 nights spread over a 12 day period. We stayed in two different air-conditioned rooms, each exceedingly clean, very comfortable, quiet, and 100% functional--including 24 hour hot water. At one point Henri went to special lengths to secure a doctor to assist in successfully addressing some severe discomfort my wife was experiencing. He arranged a number of activities for us, always directing us to what turned out to be excellent choices, whether for food, cultural shows/dances, sightseeing, or shopping. A guest could not have a better advocate than Henri--he appears to make it a special mission to make certain his guests are well-advised and cared for.

While we were guests, 2 other guests checked out and left for a distant point using a driver arranged by Henri. About 1/2 hour after the guests left, it was discovered one had left a passport under the pillow. Henri immediately contacted the driver by telephone, got on his motorcycle, and took the passport to the guest, without charge. The round trip took him well over 1 hour. This is but a special example of the kind of actions we saw from Henri, or other members of his family, while we were guests.

Henri also very skillfully arranged for an excellent driver (at a very reasonable cost) to take us on a 7 day tour of Kerala and Tamil Nadu (houseboats, Varkala, Periyar, Munnar, etc.) We were in exceptionally good hands and were able to make the best of the somewhat limited time we had available. We will be forever grateful. We like to travel on our own and not as part of tour groups. Along with the joys and independence this can mean delays, mistakes, wasted time, and discomforts. We experienced NONE of this during the 7 days we were in the care of this extremely pleasant and competent driver.

Henri went to special lengths to secure a flight for us back to Bangalore, going to the airport an hour away, personally picking up the tickets a few days in advance of the flight, paying for them out of pocket, and ultimately saving us a significant amount of money in the process--while assuring we actually got a flight.

The free breakfast provided each morning was excellent and served in a very pleasant surrounding. About all I can think of to criticize is that the rooms do not have particularly nice views, but I guess absolute perfection is not likely to be found at this price level (or most any price level, for that matter.)

My wife and I are deeply indebted to Henri and his family for enabling us to have a wonderful stay in Cochin and in Kerala. This is a very special place where we hope to return, and which we recommend without hesitation to other travelers.

When we arrived and barely checked into our room at Henri's, my huband was running a fever of 39.5 degree celsuis or 103F. Within an hour, a doctor was called in and we were brought to the hospital, my husband has been diagnosed with pneumonia.

Now, Henri not only stayed with us at the hospital until we were settled down in the hospital that same night, he visited and called us almost everyday for the next 8 days. This was amist an unplanned wedding that he was organizing for his nephew and an unfortunate death of his aunt. It did not stop him from being there for us until we were discharged from the hospital. In fact, he helped us with the discharging, drove us to another homestay because his was fully booked. These are just some of the few things that he has done for us, and really he did not have to since we barely knew him then.

He has been a rock for us and we feel really safe to have him around. Most importantly, I think we have made a friend in Fort Cochin and this experience has been really exceptional. We have travelled and stayed in places but this is one place that I can truly call home away from home because not only is the place great (read previous reviews), Henri knows Fort Cochin (& South India) like the back of his hand and would be able to recommand all the right places to be and go but what makes "Henri's Achorage" stands out is that it is also a safe haven.

Btw, his wife Joan and daughter Grace has also been really great and supportive :) If you have the chance you should also ask to meet Cocky, a babe with blue eyes.

Henri's Anchorage is a great homestay in Fort Cochin. This family run bed & breakfast is the best i stayed in during my whole journey through Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The rooms are inmaculately clean, and the family - Henri, Joan and Grace - are extremely kind, welcoming, and always willing to help.
I strongly recommend it.

Cheap, clean and convenient...3C's (just like cut, clarity and color in a diamond). Henri's is fairly new and the location is great in Fort Cochin...you can walk everywhere. Cant beat the price. This place is located just behind the Santa Cruz Basilica (church). Next time you are in Cochin check out Henri...he is a jolly guy of portugese descent.
