I am so pleased we visited the old synagogue. We also went there at 6:30 on Friday night for prayers - they need 10 men for the minyan so we couldn't have a full service, but the synagogue is beautiful!

If you are in the area the synagogue is well worth the visit.
The only disappointment is that photographs are not permitted inside which is a great shame as the synagogue is very attractive and a unique reminder of the history of this trading city.

Unlike the synagogues in Pune and Mumbai, which allow only Jews, this synagogue is open to all tourists. Although a small structure, its Chinese tiled floor and European lights are very well preserved. It also has an art gallery which depicts the history of the arrival of Jews in Kerala.

I had never been inside a synagogue before. The numbers of Jews has dwindled to fewer than 10 now. The synagogue is mainly kept open with the help of visitors. I saw a group of nuns there which seemed a little strange. Lovely tiles and lights.

There is an excellent presentation of the history of Jews in Kerala. We learned that the first Jews Visited as early as the fifth or sixth century BC, and it is mentioned in the Bible! Jews settled in the area after the destruction of the second temple in 70 AD and have pretty continuously lived in the area since then. You can see that the synagogue must have been a wonderfully vibrant place in its first centuries (it's still beautiful), but sadly, only about 60 Jews live in Kerala today. The synagogue is still in use. I found it very touching.
