“Fantastic Old Courtyard Hotel”
Reviewed January 25, 2010

I had the pleasure of spending afew days over Christmas at the Old Courtyard Hotel which is located in Fort Cochin perfectly placed near the Chinese Fishing Nets and many restaurants. It is an elegant old building, quiet and dignified with a lovely Courtyard with pretty plants. The rooms are clean and stylish and the beds incredibly comfortable. The food is delicious and the staff delightful. Everyone there was extremely informative and helpful. Mr Anil Matthew who runs Quality Tours, at the hotel is wonderfully friendly and energetic and arranged an amazing homestay in the hills for me. He has an amazing instinct for knowing just what his client wants and the place he arranged for me on a wonderul rubber plantation estate was my most memorable time in India this time. It will always be a precious memory. If you want anything arranging (homestays deep in the Keralian countryside, houseboat tours, taxis, even ayuvedic massages) get Mr Matthew to sort it out and you won't be disappointed! He makes everything effortless and fun and can give you a real taste of India where you don't feel like a tourist but you get into the heart of Kerala.

I didn't stay at this hotel but did book dinner for one night. While the courtyard has the potential to be beautiful they don't seem to have made the most of it. The service was poor - slow, non communicative waiter, no cuttlery on table, water served warm. The food was edible but nothing exciting.

As this guest mentioned, they did not stay in the hotel. If so, how can they rate the rooms?
We do remember this guests very well. They had ordered their food, and have eaten 2/3rds of it and then complained about the food. When the GRE spoke to them to enquire about the complaint, they said that the vegetables used were cheap vegetables. When asked if something is wrong with the food, they said nothing but just the same comment about the vegetables. It was explained that we use indigenous Kerala vegetables only. The Chef even came out to speak to them and asked what was wrong aside from the comment on the vegetables. They mentioned that they were chefs and that nothing was wrong except for the vegetables. When requested to pay, they did so unwillingly and said that in that case had they known that they had to pay, they would have finished the food. The guests expected a free meal by just complaining about the food.
At the same time that this was going on, other guests who were leaving were telling us that this was their best meal yet after being in India for 2 weeks.
As for other comments about service, then this should also have been the feedback from the other guests that night. But this was not so, as they enjoyed their food.
Trip advisor is being misused by a lot of travellers. And it is sad to say that when they come to India, they think that if you bargain and complain you don't have to pay. This is taking advantage of the good nature, hospitality and warmth of Indians who are sincere in their efforts. And the threat is always that they will write their reviews in Trip Advisor.
Having travelled in the West, we know that a complain from a guests is treated differently. And I am sure that this guests will not try this trick if they were having a meal in the West.

Old charming hotel with lot of history and athmosphere, beautiful furnished and decorated with antiques, very clean, just in the center of the old town

Romantic restaurant with delicious food (try the dessert "kerala bananas") in a beautiful
old courtyard with garden, often evenings with musicians

Very kind and helpfull staff, you can book Ayurveda Treatments & Trips to the Backwaters right at the hotel

...my tongue was terribly disappointed in my mom's cooking skills. How did I ever consider the icecream or cake creations i was served at home to be mouthwatering, if food like this exists?

If you want to experience a culinary epiphany, the Old Courtyard Hotel is the place to be. An excellent service and beautiful setting matches the mindblowing dishes perfectly!

Visit to Kochin was more than amazing, especially thanks to the Old Courtyard Hotel! The position of the place is convenient for all the walkers and sightsee-ers, athmosphere very charming (sometimes it must be hard to leave the hotel itself!) and the stuff very helpful and fast with organizing any kind of entertainment (like Kathakali shows) and further trip with its activities.
Besides, you certainly MUST try the dishes served in the restaurant! The meals can make your experience even better (I second the opinion about the lemon cheesecake and add the chocolate mousse to that!). Overall, highly recommended!

We were just delighted with our room - a large one with huge windows opening on to the street (not too noisy) and beautifully furnished with an old four poster bed and other antiques, as well as stylish and comfortable modern seating. The spacious bathroom had a shower that worked well, was very clean and well lit. This is one room that has no AC - but I always ask for no AC and go with ceiling fans when I can, so that was perfect for us. There were 4 ceiling fans and another on a stand if needed. Internet access was available down the hall. Staff were polite and helpful at all times. The location, right in the heart of the old city, is perfect for walking out to the harbour or around the local busy streets and markets. We had a lovely breakfast here, but did not eat other meals in the hotel, so I can't comment on the food. However, I did enjoy hearing Indian music coming from the courtyard one evening when we returned from a walk, while diners watched in pleasure. It is a beautiful courtyard with orchids and greenery.
