We last stayed at the Bolgatty Palace in February 2003. We absolutely loved it as we had been made to feel so special as the staff were so attentive.
Our same tour operator had tried to persuade us to stay in a different hotel this time, as they felt that it had become neglected but we insisted on re visiting the place of which we had so many special memories.
The reception staff were cold, uninterested and indifferent.
We were 2 adults and a child of 9 so when we were taken to one of the cottages overlooking the water we were very disapponted as it had 2 single beds ,peeling cracked walls, dirty and a window overlooking the water which only parrtially opened meaning that there was no outlook to enjoy and was stifflingly hot.We complained and was told that we could upgrade to a suite at almost double the cost.Eventually we were upgraded at no extra cost as the tour operator stepped in and confirmed that we had indeed paid for the superior room. The pool area ( which we had thought was gorgeous ) was littered with bird excrement, had cracked paving stones and was really neglected. The service which had been so impressive was non existant. We had to keep going into the restaurant to ask for everything , knives, forks, more drinks etc. where 5 young waiters stood around oblivious to people by the pool. After we complained a charming manager called Vhargese was assigned to look after us. He was such a cheery soul and apologised explaining that all the staff were trainees . It seems that it is state owned and not managed in a way that a private hotel might have been.
On a positive note we watched a hilarious Keralan soap opera being filmed where a politician got shot. Bernard the boat man was as we knew him from before,a charming helpful man. We tipped the staff that we felt deserved a tip but they were so terrified of accepting money that it was secreted into socks!! The pool area was scrubbed the next day. This place could be a real paradise as it is set in such a lovely place but my goodness the service and management need a good shake up.We would not go back again. We travel frequently to India and this place is the only one where there is no welcome when you arrive.Even the manager did not enquire as to how things had been before we left he avoided us all the time.
