“Mind the extras”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

While Silverweed may offer international standard cleanliness, I am afraid the extras were also priced at International standards.
We were charged almost 1500 rupees [nearly 20 pounds] to wash 6 garments and a few socks and underwear.
Dinner similarly was expensive at 800 rupees for two, dinner at the nearby restaurant [dal roti] was just over 200 for two [and excellent food at that price]. Dinner at the more upmarket Oceanus [also a few minutes walk] was under 600 for two.
We were charged 1200 for a taxi from the airport, again we later realised that this was 400 Rs more than the standard rate.
Our room was not cleaned for the 4 days we were there, this may be common in homestays but it is not ideal in a dusty place like India.
If you are paying just to sleep here, it is very good value, the family are welcoming and hospitable and the outdoor area is full of beautiful orchids.

Room Tip: you must have an air conditioned room.

Dear Guest,

Thank u for your comments that cleanliness of our Home stay is of International standards.

As regards your other comments regarding the rates being high, I am afraid I have to disagree with you.

FIRSTLY, about the charges of laundry, I bet, if the same number of pieces (33 nos of linen)were given to an outside laundry outlet, the charges would have been even quite high, besides being the fact the standard of fine washing wouldn’t have obtained, since we get such works done at our place itself, by our house-maid, in cleanest water. (The quality of water being used at outside agency is any body’s guess!).We just don’t compromise on cleaning! Unfortunately yours is the only adverse view in this matter so far.

Secondly, about Dinner charges observed to be expensive, let me state that the non-spicy home-made food we offer to our honored guests just can’t be compared with spicy stuff given at outside food joints, both quantitatively and qualitatively apart from the homely touch. Where else u can get full meals consisting Chapattis with sweet chutney, Fish curry POMFRET(one full large quality fish) ,Cauliflower curry, Potato fry and papads above all Best quality BASMATI RICE at the rates charged by us ?? Hence your criticism about high rate is not based on facts.

Lastly, about your comments on room cleaning, unless the guests asks for changing linen etc, while they leave their rooms for the day, We will not enter the room. This was not done by u. That explains for your views. In other cases we get such job done, and so far had no room for such complaints from any other guests. Regarding the Taxi. Please check with the prepaid taxis you get from the airport and the type of vehicle you get from them.I had arranged a vehicle from an outside agency to do so and they had arranged an ERTIGA (S.U.V )VEHICLE FOR PICK UP.The rate was emailed to you prior before your arrival .So if you had any change of mind you could have informed us earlier and the plan could have been changed. Moreover we believe in genuine business and to ensure that our guests come back to us again and again. You were free to communicate directly to us any time for any such difference in all these matters. Moreover you wrote a good comments about us in our guest comment register.
However, this remark is taken in the right perspective to avoid such instances from our guests.
Regards.

This was my first place to stay in Kerala, and what a wonderful place! Airport pick-up with an English-speaking driver, and I was warmly welcomed when I arrived at the homestay at 5am by Krishna Kumar and his mother who had a cool, freshly-made lemon drink for me. My room (one of two) was large, spacious and spotlessly clean with a large double bed with clean linen, big clean towel and an equally large and spotless bathroom with a great hot shower. The Kumars were always available to help, question or suggest places to go. The inclusive breakfast - freshly squeezed fruit juice (watermelon is gorgeous!), fresh fruit salad, a different Keralan dish every day eg dosas or idli, toast, tea/coffee - was enough food to satisfy me all day, and Mrs Kumar was always only too willing to cook delicious food in the evening. Food was served on the veranda which is full of plants - the only drawback of eating on the veranda in the evening was the mosquitoes. The boat trip they recommend is fantastic - a really great day trip in an area of peaceful backwaters, totally unlike the 'backwaters highway' in Alleppey. I was sad to leave and will definitely choose to stay at Silverweed again; but I'll make sure I book long in advance because this homestay will surely be booked up for months once the word gets out what a great place this is. A hard act to follow!

Room Tip: There are only two excellent rooms, both equal in size and facilities

This is an amazing place! Only 2 rooms for guests with cleanliness and hospitality of the first order. Krishna and his family meet you and make you really at home. Brightly lit room, large spotless bathroom, and the most hygienic place I have ever seen of all the home stays.Home cooked food is brilliant. Krishna's mother is a wonderful cook - completely non-spicy food cooked with love, is something I looked forward to at every breakfast and dinner time. The ambiance in the verandah outside the room is peaceful, surrounded by lovely orchids and shade plants with the sounds of at least 10 species of birds around the house .. all this made me totally relaxed and at peace with the environment. where can you get a place with such qualities? I would come to this homestay again and again - not to a hotel in Kochi.

A truly beautiful homestay with the perfect host and his lovely family. The room was well-lite, and the bathroom is just amazingly big and clean. The homestay has a beautiful veranda, surrounded by lovely plants, a truly relaxing place to hang out. Food is the best I have had in Cochin, all homemade and tailored to my needs of no spicy food. Will definitely come back and stay in Silverweed again.

My wife and I stayed in Silverweed for 5 nights and would highly recommend a stay at this property. The room was VERY clean, the bed large and very comfortable with clean linens, and the bathroom is one of the largest and cleanest bathrooms you'll ever find in India. The AC was very cool, a ceiling fan, and even provided a mosquito net to avoid any annoyances in the night. But aside from the room being perfect it all pales in comparison to the host's mother's cooking. Waking up to her breakfast was a treat like nothing else. Her food was by far the best we've had in all India. You can get lunch or dinner prepared if you wish for a bit extra, which I highly recommend you do. Oh and the location is very good, just right around the corner from the main tourist parts, but off the road slightly so you don't hear honking all night. Do yourself a favor and stay here. Only con is the WIFI is a bit iffy, but I think that's more of a Kochi issue than a silverweed issue.

Oh and the host was extremely knowledgeable of the area and helped us get around and even arranged an amazing backwater tour for us. Many of the tours are jammed, but the one he booked for us had less people and was much more leisurely.

Room Tip: Only two rooms and as far as I can tell they are both excellent and basically the same.

The calm surrounding, green environment ,soothing atmosphere ,offered the right place I was looking for a calm and peaceful stay. The cleanest rooms are spacious and wonderfully done up offering best hotel facilities. The balcony garden is too beautiful offering the best sight one can get as you step out of the room. The Kerala food we had in "Silverweed" tasted the best ever we had.The homely atmosphere is provided by the hosts in all their behaviour and one never feels away from home. The rates too are very friendly and down to earth compared to the quality and services provided.Well done Mr Krishnakumar .Very strongly recommended for everyone.
