“A not so good experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2014

While on a visit to Kerala with family we had a chance to visit this place and were expecting a fantastic performance considering the fact that this Kathakali dance is native to Kerala. We have had seen such performances on TV and were aware of the intricacies. However we were very disappointed with the performance. Infact one of the hotel had put up a better dance performer during the dinner time.

“An intriguing, but long performance”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2014

We followed the advice of other reviewers and went to watch make up being applied. This was a mistake, as this took as long as the entire performance. However, this art form is unique and something everyone coming to Kerala should see, so I would advise you to only come 15 or so minutes before the show to see the make up application.

“Intriquing”

Take the time to arrive early and watch the makeup applied - it is the only way to truly appreciate the art. Fascinating.

“Well worth seeing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2014

A great show detailing some ancient,mythical/traditional/religious stories. Very colourful and exciting but take note of the explanations of hand, body and eye movements beforehand to fully appreciate the main story. Get there early to watch the make-up session on stage - an hour or a little less should be sufficient - before the storytelling starts. Try to book the front row seats if you can. When invited on stage during the explanation session - do go up, you'll be sent back down again with similar hand/body and eye gesturing. An excellent introduction to the art of Kathakali and the culture of Southern India. Great for kids and adults alike.

“A great cultural evening”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2014

A wonderful performance of Kathakali. Must see cultural experience when in Kerala. The make-up and costumes are as much a part of the show as the performance, and watching the make-up application before the show is worth the time.
