We had no idea about Kathakali but by the end we were enchanted. We arrived early and watched the performers put on their makeup made from pure pigments and in striking colours. Then there was an explanation of the movements and expressions which represented the various emotions of the performers but by the time the dance had started I had forgotten which was which but was enchanted by the whole thing: the music, the drumming and the actors. Luckily we had been given a "crib sheet" with the story based on the Mahabharatha and could follow what was happening. It was an amazing experience and we are so glad we went. The centre runs a great many activities and it is certainly worthwhile finding out.
