We went to see a Kathakali performance. It was good fun to see the art form so up and close. The place is pretty basic but if you like dance, music and cultural you should enjoy it!

You can get there an hour before the performance and watch the actors apply their elaborate make-up. They will also demonstrate the hand and facial gestures that will be used in the performance which explains the action as the drama is essentially speechless aside from noises and the drums and background singer. There is somewhat of a humorous element as well.

The daily Kathakali show is only one hour long and is based on characters from the Indian epics who with painted faces and splendid costumes, dance the story accompanied by a percussionist. What I liked was the way in which the first half-hour was used to to explain the alphabets in Kathakali language(hand gestures) and Navarasas (basic nine facial expression) prior to the performance.
My only dislike was the rude audience members who had no idea how to watch a live performance and who talked and laughed in an inappropriate manner.

Fabulous venue for dance and evening concerts. At 6:30 am I took a great yoga class on the top floor with the sounds of the neighborhood roosters. I stayed afterwards to hear a morning raga played on tabla and sitar -- so glad that I did.

We went to the Kalaripayttu martial arts performance. It was not very busy as most people attend the evening dance show, but it was an amazing performance. The show was introduced and narrated well, to help understand the various movements and implements used. The men were very skilled, and showcased a form of martial arts not seen by everyone. They also demonstrated with volunteers at the end. Overall, a worthwhile show.
