“First home stay....but not my last!”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

We stayed here for four nights and had an excellent stay. Not only were the family warm and welcoming, they were very helpful with offering us local knowledge, which was vital for me since I hadn't planned very well! The breakfast she made was not only exciting and different (on request) but very tasty and filling. The rooms were in top condition and everything was in working order. All together great stay.

Stayed 3 nights at Maison Casero on my Kerala trip. Overall I enjoyed my stay there.

What I liked about it:
+ Good service: Priya and her husband were very friendly, flexible, and helped us with everything we asked including organizing transportation from the airport.
+ Wifi: Stable, and access from the rooms also. Better than most other homestays we stayed at in Kerala in that respect
+ Cleanliness: Basic rooms, but very clean. Also plus that hot water is available in the bathroom

Improvement potential:
- Breakfast was ok, toast and eggs, but I would have preferred an Indian option.

We had pre booked our stay here months in advance, before we left the uk as wanted to have our first night in India sorted. We couldn't really have wished for more.

The driver met us at the airport as promised (slightly expensive at INR 900 vs airport taxi of about 700, but worth it for peace of mind).
We also booked the backwater trip through Priya, which cost 600 for the day. Was really good with the morning spent on larger boat, lunch, then afternoon on a small boat in the tiny channels.

Regarding the homestay itself: we had probably the largest of the three rooms, at the front of the house. Good size, nice big windows, good aircon and very clean. Bathroom was good as well. But only got one towel.
Nice balcony around the top level where he bedrooms are.
Decent wifi as well, reached room no problems.

Location is good, 5 min walk to the Chinese fishing nets and anything in fort Cochin, on a relatively quiet back street surrounded by local homes, so nice to be away from the main tourist drag.

Priya was lovely as well. Very helpful and welcoming and makes a fantastic breakfast!!! Unfortunately she wasn't feeling too well, so we couldn't do her cooking course.

Perfect place to start your India trip.

Stayed may 2013, as a couple.

I have chosen this Homestay considering the review on Trip Advisor and maybe due to the very nice rating I have been little bit disappointed...
Positive points are that Maison Casero Homestay is well located, clean, well maintained, there is AC available in the room and small balcony.
Negative points are that the room we had was quiet dark (we say at least another one with much more light) and when arriving we had to ask to get a second bed sheet (we had only one single one) and second towel...
Moreover after our stay in Kochi we moved to Munnar and we asked owners to book a taxi for us: price was 2900 INR which is 400 INR more than the standard price but since I was thinking it was including AC I did not care about it. Surprise was when we asked the driver 5 minutes after leaving to put the AC and he announced 300 INR extra for the AC and 70 km later he asked us to stop the AC because in the mountain it would slow us down... So I don t know if it is bad luck but when I ask my Homestay / Hotel to book a taxi for me I expect them to do so with somebody reliable and it was not the case at all not adding that he was not driving smoothly.
In conclusion it is in my opinion a good Homestay for the price paid but do not expect anything exceptional and be careful if you ask them to book a taxi for you.

...because we never got to stay here! Despite booking 2 A/C rooms in the main house for ourselves and our 2 children, we were shown on arrival after a long flight from London to the "apartment" which is in a separate building a couple of hundred metres from the main house. The "apartment" is actually two bedrooms connected by a large but empty room on the first floor of another house. There is no A/C at the "apartment" which looked a bit dingey and we have no idea who was living downstairs. What really upset us was that twice the owner had offered us the apartment via email and twice we had turned it down as we wanted to stay in a "homestay" with A/C rooms which she had replied was fine. As we were arriving early in the morning we had also agreed to pay for 4 nights instead of 3 so that we could have immediate access to our rooms. The owner's husband showed us to the homestay of his sister. We had 2 rooms there with A/C and it was ok but not great. All in all not a great start to our first trip to India.

The homestay is really good - the owners are nice and very helpful. Just BE CAREFUL that you are not send to the uncles homestay. This happened, when I arrived - although I had made a reservation. The uncles home ist not very clean. There is no place to sit. In Maison Casero you have a nice balcony.
They organize Kathakkali and Backwater tickets - they charche a bit more (Rs 50-100).
You can leave your luggage there when you have an overnight train or a late flight. It was possible to get a room for changing clothes and using a toilet before leaving in the evening - this is perfect.

When we arrived at Maison Casero, it seems one of the rooms we reserved had a broken AC unit so Priya arranged for another room at a nearby homestay, which was just as nice. The rooms were basic but clean. The fresh breakfast we got daily was delicious and Priya was very helpful in giving us recommendations of places to go and see. We stayed for two nights and then stayed on a houseboat for two and when we returned to Maison it seems Priya didn't have any more rooms left so she sent us to her sister's home right down the road from her house. As I had confirmed with her the week before I was a bit annoyed that we were no longer staying at her home. However, her sister's place was just as warm and as welcoming. Homestays are definitely the way to go in Kochi.
