Phenomenal museum, one hour of watching traditional make up being applied, a demonstration of key eye, facial and hand movements given before the performance. The best show in town.

This was one of the highlights of our visit to Kochi, a very beautiful building holding an idiosyncratic collection of artefacts including musical instruments and dance costumes and masks as well as wooden bronze and stone statues, models and more. Absolutely wonderful collection that took our breath away when we entered the hall.
A couple of points: We were allowed to take photographs for a small extra charge and we were told that the Kathakali shows are now only for prearranged groups.

The kerala traditional theater is based on eye and facial movements and the small part we saw was interesting but there was a man built like a brick outhouse and his character was supposed to be that of a young girl duped by an unscrupulous creature. It was a bit like Dick Emery meets Little Britain which was a shame as they were gifted performers but it was hard to accept the premise when they were big hairy men.

The second part of the show was martial arts and that was awesome would recommend going to see a full show

My wife and went on a organised tour to kerala and one of the things we did was visit the folklore centre first we was as a group, allowed to go to watch them apply the makeup, then afterwards the performance, we loved all of it and felt privaleged to have seen this, would definetely recommend anybody young or old to go and visit.

A very interesting collection of folklore art and theatre costumes. I was very fascinated by the masks, it was a bit like walking into a child's nightmare. They have a theatre were they have katkhakali performances in the evening. I wish I had gone. Maybe you will go instead?

The museum is itself is a pretty building, and it also smells very nice of incense.
