Old Lighthouse Bristow Hotel
Ranked #181 of 211 Hotels in Kochi (Cochin)
Reviewed January 15, 2011

We had been traveling around Kerala staying in home stays and decided to see if we could find a hotel that would provide good Typhoon Season prices. Old Bristow delivered! Our room was by the pool and we were treated with the utmost attention. The food was good and the spa was nice. The prices listed were quite high. Though it is a high value hotel, we were very thankful for the discount offered. I would go back to this hotel if we return to Kochi.

The Od Lighthouse Bristow hotel is a lovely choice of hotel unless you need the internet. The location is wonderful, such a gorgeous view of the ocean, and you can hear the waves at night. The staff are very friendly and attempt to be helpful however it can be difficult to understand what is being said in some cases and a course on ‘listening’ is needed by one person in particular. The exception to this rule is the restaurant staff and the person with the best English in the whole place seems to be one of the waiters who is also a barista – search for him if you need to explain anything.
Unlike a previous reviewer, I loved the pool and used it every day. Yes there were leaves in it, but I think you would expect that being as it is under huge trees that were dropping their leaves all day. There were only four deck chairs though which is a problem being as the hotel allows outsiders in for 500rps including lunch, thus it is easy for actual guests to be denied a pool lounge. This situation needs to be rectified.
We enjoyed the food greatly. Not much more to be said about that, except that as you would expect the Indian food is far better than the ‘western’ food.
Ah, but then there’s the internet. We were there for six days and I needed the internet. The hotel’s advertisement says that internet is included. What it should say is that internet is not charged for however that it only works randomly, really quite rarely and when it is working it doesn’t allow you to log in. I know that many of the guests here at this time were upset about this continuing situation. OK, I accept that this is Kerala and that even the electricity is not reliable. But I suggest that the hotel (and it’s not exactly a backpacker cheapie where you might expect things to not work) doesn’t advertise internet as an asset that they can offer to guests if it is not actually available.
In summary, it seemed to us that many of the upper end places in Kochi were more popular than the Old Lighthouse and we weren’t sure why. Perhaps the lack of a liquor license was the clincher for many, but it didn’t bother us at all.

If some of the staff’s attention to detail and communication skills were polished up it would make the place even better, I feel bad making this comment as some staff are exceptional, but service interactions need to be standardised and you don’t want (as we did) customers saying ‘don’t ask person x’ because you know something won’t be done properly.

Despite this issue, I would return to this hotel and would recommend it to others

Stayed here for 3 nights, had a nice welcome, very nice view, was relived to entry the property after a long drive from the airport to the Hotel, was so serene. The staff very friendly, always happy to help with any information and went out of their way. View and the calmness of the place is just excellent. Food at the restaurant was also ok. On the whole a must stay place to experience the true Cochin, the heritage building and the coast with great service.

We had a very pleasant stay at this hotel. First a very warm welcome with coconut water at the lovely terrace where you can feel the sea breeze. Then the lovely building and the tastefully decorated room with a hugh bed with crisp white linen make you just want to lay down and rest for ever.
But you should not stay in bed - you should walk the narrow streets of old Cochin which is easy as the location is extremely good - just a few minutes walk to everything including the Chinese fishing nets. The Old Lighthouse is also one of the few hotels with a panorama sea view from the restaurant and the garden.
We tried the one of the massage programs on offer - seemed very professional and felt lovely!
The attitude of the staff was warm, friendly and service minded.
Any drawbacks? Maybe some minor issues:
The hotel restaurant isoutside on a terrace at the sea side - very nice view but unfortunately fleas were a bit of a nuisance - after all this is India! But this is not a problem - there are lots of restaurants in town.
The pool was nice enough to relax by, but not really inviting for swimming.
I would no doubt select Old Lighthouse if I went to Cochin again!

We stayed one night and wished we had stayed more. It's a lovely hotel with fantastic service without the pretentiousness of some boutique hotels. It's well located, overlooking the sea, and it's easy to walk to other restaurants in the area. Woul definitely recommend it.

We stayed here for two nights on our arrival to kerala in mid November. The hotel was a converted old mansion house, clean and very well appointed with beautiful grounds facing onto the seafront. The staff and service was exemplarary and would definately recommend. Our only gripe was that the hotel served no alcohol at all. We understood that many places did not have an alcohol licence, although we hoped that the hotel may be able to offer us a beer (unofficially of couse.. perhaps with the bottle disguised in newspaper like other places in Kerala do). something which would have been perfect to watch the sunset and the ships go by, but instead had to make do with a soft drink. We later found other similar class hotels in Cochin during our stay where we were able to have a beer served in some form or another. Only a small glitch to moan about but if they dont make an effort to get an alcohol licence (or serve it unofficially) it may put us off staying here again in the future.

We stayed at the Old Lighthouse for three nights after having arrived in Kochi and it was an ideal place to get over our initial jet-lag. On the edge of town, it is peaceful and quiet and yet only a 10 minute walk to the heart of bustling Fort Cochin, via the chinese nets - a beautiful stroll! The rooms were great: we had a garden room with a 4-poster, which was a generously sized and well equipped. The staff were exceptional, and could not do enough for us. One tiny frustration - please sort out your WiFi - it is very slow and unreliable, especially in the rain! The best recommendation, though, is that we returned for a second visit for the final two nights of our trip! In all, a great hotel and great value too!
