Old Lighthouse Bristow Hotel

The building and location are simply beautiful: a shiny white colonial-style big house by the sea, with the maritime wind blowing by the open windows and making the curtains dancing in a mesmerizing way. A little swimming pool ads to the atmosphere.
Rooms equipment and level of cleanness basically fit what you can expect from that category of hotels, with a special mention for the bluish relaxing walls, the huge bathroom and the complimentary Wi-Fi.
The only drawback I would like to point out is the service at the restaurant: desperately slow... (but like really slow). But the friendliness of the staff quickly makes you forget you were irritated.

Stayed for two nights a forthnight ago and was very pleased and positively surprised after all the reviews. Maybe I had low expectations, but staff was very friendly and helpful and most worked according to plan.

The building is beautiful and the rooms are great. It is probably and 100 year old building, but nicely brought up to date. I see it as a genuine northern europe seaside resort as they looked at the turn of the past century.

We had a quick stopover in Cochin for one night and decided to stay in Fort Cochin. Old light house Bristow delivers its promise of being the only Heritage Hotel by the beach-side. The Hotel is well located in fort Cochin with Chinese fishing net and good eateries at walkable distances. The Hotel has an amazing view of the beach. I have always loved the beach. The smell of the salty water, the wind in my face, the gentle roar of the waves all combines to create a sense of peace and calm. By view I mean only view, don’t think anyone can venture and take a dip in that side of the beach. The rooms are spacious and have a vintage touch to them with wooden flooring and kind of thatched roof ceiling with no fan.
A big letdown of this place is the food and the service. Not at all satisfactory – the service is slow and the food is below ordinary (esp. the breakfast is a joke for being called a buffet). According to me “Eating is really one of your indoor sports. You play three times a day, and it's well worth while to make the game as pleasant as possible.”
So according to me this place is beautifully located by the sea with decent rooms and the only spoilers are the food and the service which could be improved to make this place a far better place.

the location and the hotel are beautiful, but the running of it chaos, the staff are all very friendly and cant do enough for you, but they dont have a clue, we waited an hour for a coffee round the pool, the steak we ordered for dinner was a burger because they ran out of steak and didnt think the swop would matter!!!, the system was down at check out and so we couldnt pay and were asked if we would get an autorickshaw into town to withdraw cash. The internet never worked the whole week we were there and they kept saying it was being fixed, but looking at other reviews it hasnt worked for months and despite advertising a jacuzzi it is evident it hasnt been in operation for months if not years. The positive side is that the room are lovely, the surrounding stunning and the overall atmosphere is friendly and comfortable. The staff are entertainment itself just because watching them is hillarious, they have not got a clue but you have to give them 10 out of 10 to trying, it would make a good television reality show, the two young housekeeping boys were fantastic, they were so enthusiastic and couldnt do enough for you as well as being funny. We would stay here again we really enjoyed it, but you have to accept it for what it is and that is part of its charm and appeal

Room Tip: all rooms are lovely, we were shown several including the suites, there are only 12 and two of those...

Stay in a pool villa, which is lovely and spacious with 4 poster bed & sunken bath. The pool is nice but towels badly faded and jacuzzi out if use - stuffed up with old leaves.

However, it's a little like staying at Fawlty Towers...

The fuse went in the room. Gave the key to the receptionist to fix. He returned the key to me & told me that it was fixed. Went back to my room - not fixed.

Restaurant service is non existent. Waiters stand about chatting and expect you to ring a bell if you want something. Was given my bill without being asked if I wanted coffee or dessert.

Receptionist rarely available. Spa staff seem to be on duty.. Wanted to change money but told couldn't as accountant not available, then told I could. Next day told that I had to go into town to change money. Manager offered to drive me there on his car at 9pm... As a 24 year old single female, it seemed ridiculous. Especially as all the other, much worse, hotels I've stayed in during the trip have offered money exchange.

Lastly taxi prices are significantly higher than they should be. My friends staying at Hetitage Gams were charged 900 to go to airport, here they are charging 1400.

In conclusion, the hotel itself is lovely, the service is really sub-par.

We stayed at this Hotel for 3 nights at the end of March. I had picked the Hotel as the pictures and location met our requirements. On arrival we were greeted with a cold drink and check in took no time at all and were taken to our room which was a large suite on the 1st floor.
This was a lovely room part of the old colonial house with its own balcony, however since its position is above the kitchen vents and generator it was extremely noisey all the time. In addition to this the view from your balcony was of the guns and guard post at the Naval base next door. Due to my husband having mobility issues I asked the next morning for a ground floor room and was swopped within a couple of hours to a Villa Room next to the pool which was much quieter and again a very nice room.

Location - yes it is next to the beach, however this is an Indian beach and not one that you would want to sunbathe on. It is used by the locals all day long and on Sunday family day is packed.

My negative for this hotel is the service mainly in relation to food and drink which was shocking. First night we ordered room service which did turn up in a timely manner, however as beer is not stocked in the minibars you had to ring reception and request a bottle - This never turned up
2nd night we sat on the seats to the rear of the building to watch the sunset - it took 15 mins to actually have our beverage order taken and then another 15 for it to turn up. Our evening meal was an equally lengthly process taking over 20 mins to actually have our order taken.

This was a recuring theme throughout our stay and was a reason that some other guests cut short their stay.

This is a lovely looking hotel and reasonally clean and tidy, however they seem to lack the correct management and staff to pull the whole package off. I understand that this hotel is owned by someone from Mumbai who is obviously not bothered to put the right management in place.

This hotel is 1 hour from the airport on a good run.

Room Tip: Have a Villa by the pool. Do not have the Gertrude Suite as this is over the Kitchen Vent and Gener...

This is a tricky review to write as the place inspires different feelings in me. On the plus side the overall building, position and rooms are lovely. Its got a good pool, albeit with a few missing tiles. The staff are also very friendly and keen to do well. On the minus side, the building needs a lick of paint and some other simple maintainance and the staff need to be better trained to harness their obvious enthusiasm and desire to please. Some simple things let them down. For example the public toilets downstairs, which we had to use whilst waiting for our room don't reflect well on the standard of the rest of the hotel and give the wrong first impression. Also for some reason there is a sort of compost heap underneath the restaurant terrace and the breakfast buffet equipment was falling apart. I would go back but only, for the time being, if the prices were 30% less than the other places in Cochin that are currently operating at the standard the Old Lighthouse aspires to. I do wish them luck though because I'd like to see them get it right. Maybe they just need to understand and act on the fact that its the final 5% that makes 100% of the difference.

Room Tip: We had the entry level garden view room and it was excellent. Its outside the rooms where the place...
