The hotel is clean, comfortable and well-equipped - the room had air conditioning, a fan and hot water! Even had a double bed rather than twin beds in double rooms.

The reception staff were friendly, spoke very good english and were knowledgeable about the area and very helpful.

We were in Kochi for just one night for a wedding and wanted a reasonable priced hotel in the heart of town . Senate met all those expectations and more . Great staff, very helpful ...very clean rooms ...The only thing that could improve could be the breakfast buffet ..not much of a choice and there was no Kerala food ...we were looking forward to appams and stew etc ...maybe that was asking for too much ....but in all a great budget hotel ...

The Senate Hotel

The Senate is a very reasonably priced hotel in Ernakulam, the business district of Kochi. My room was comfortable, even with two single beds rather than a double. The bathroom was clean and adequate. The room had a small bar fridge, though this only seemed to operate when the room key activated the electricity master switch. The air conditioning system – an essential requirement - cooled the room down rapidly, though it proved impossible to change the 20-degree setting. The flat screen tv picks up a multitude of channels, most of them Indian. All rooms have free password protected wifi, which occasionally dropped out at random.

The hotel has quite a nice restaurant, though like most places in Kerala seemed to open during fairly narrow time bands, with breakfast starting at 7:30am and 7:30pm for the evening meal. Breakfast was included in my booking and it is what I would describe as Indian-basic. This is one type of fruit; fruit juice; a couple of different vegetable curries and some roti – along with toast and jam. Coffee and tea – both pre-made with milk – were served on two out of the four mornings I was there. Along with many other hotels alcohol was not available, apparently because the Kerala State Government charges a lot for a license and then adds a great deal of red tape to the process.

An annoyance – which I assume is beyond the control of the hotel – is the number of mosquitos that come into the room at night. They are very quiet and only leave a small bite, but I would much rather be without them and on day two of my stay bought some rub on repellant as well as a decent can of insect spray. That fixed the problem. My room looked out at another building only a couple of metres away, but since I was out exploring most of the time that didn't matter.

For the price, The Senate is a perfectly fine place to stay in that part of town. However, what the hotel cannot do anything about is its location. This sounded fine from a bit of basic research – namely it is very close to one end of MG Road and also only a 10 minute walk from another supposed tourist draw card of Marine Drive. For me, MG Road was a far cry from the vibrant shopping district I expected, being instead a not especially impressive collection of small shops mainly selling clothing and the occasional larger shopping mall containing nothing of particular note. Similarly, Marine Drive was in reality a far cry from the image that has been created of it. Rather than boasting outdoor restaurants and cafes it in fact is the repository of a great deal of litter and not much besides that. I didn’t see any restaurants at all along the waterfront walkway, though at one end there were a couple of rundown malls with some very scrappy shops selling various accessories.

In summary – The Senate is good value for money and is well managed, with friendly and helpful staff. My only advise for visitors is to think hard about whether they actually want to be in Ernakulam – or whether they would prefer to be in the Fort Kochi area with its far greater concentration of restaurants, cafes and historic monuments (and slightly greater availability of beer). Having said that, a ferry from Ernakulam to Fort Kochi costs a mere 4 Rp – which seems ridiculously low, even by Indian standards – for a very pleasant 20 minute trip across the harbor. An auto rickshaw from The Senate to Fort Kochi is 200 Rp – probably less if you can be bothered arguing, though don’t expect a lot of flexibility on pricing if you are a Westerner.

Room Tip: If you like the occasional alcoholic drink, the nearest place is the International Hotel, located of...

I spent 8 days in Kerala with my family from Dec 14th toll Dec 21st. The holiday started at Cochin and we spent time in Munnar, Thekkady, Allepy and Kumarakom before returning to Cochin for the flight back to Delhi. Hope this update with all its plus and minus points helps those planning similar holiday in the beautiful state of Kerala. And I hope others also take time of to share their feedback for holidays in not just Kerala but any place in India and abroad so that others can benefit from the feedback and have truly enjoyable and relaxing holidays 
Day 1 and Day 8 in Cochin:

A nice city as long as you do not get stuck in the traffic. Keep atleast 2-3 hrs driving time from the airport to the city. Choose staying on or around the Marine drive. Do not miss the evening boat ride on Marine drive and Fort Cochin – the Bassilica, the St Francis church, Chinese fishing nets and the Dutch museum.

I made the mistake of booking hotel Senate in Cochin. First mistake was that Senate is not on Marine Drive and 2nd that the hotel, despite being relatively clean, and with reasonably good food is devoid of ethics. They sell two room categories - Executive and Deluxe.

I booked the high end Deluxe but these rooms on the 2nd floor were terrible. The windows in both the rooms opened into a garbage shaft and the filthy back side of an ugly house. So much for my thought of booking the more expensive Deluxe room. Perhaps the 2nd floor rooms are so bad that unless they call it Deluxe and Special nobody will stay there. By marketing those as Deluxe not only are they able sell but even charge higher.

Within an hour of checking in we forced them to move us to Executive rooms on the 4th floor. These also are supposedly much less expensive. Also atleast the windows opened up to an open sky.

Even though Executive rooms are much cheaper than Deluxe rooms the unethical management and poorly trained staff insisted that they will still charge us for Deluxe room. And the silly logic was that they had already given a discount and the booking mail clearly gave the price for Deluxe room. Beware that Senate has a tariff card but no tariff policy and customer focus. Their policy is to charge and fleece the customer of what they can. Do not get fooled by them calling some rooms as Executive and some as Deluxe. Needless to say that after a very unpleasant stay we cancelled our Day 8 booking in Senate.

Hence the advise is to stay away from Senate Hotel and if you are unfortunately already booked then cancel it and book elsewhere. If you cannot cancel then stay only on floor 4 and above and make sure that you have it in writing the charges you will have to pay. Senate hotel has the potential to mess up your stay in Cochin.

Now the last million dollar advise:
How good your holiday will be will depend upon how much effort you put into selecting your resorts. If you let the travel companies Make My Trip, Yatra, Hotel.com or any other travel company select and book the hotels/resorts for you would sacrificed a lot of your hard earned money and messed up your holiday. They will book you into resorts and hotels which are not good enough for anybody and hence nobody would book on their own. That is precisely the reason why such hotels and resorts need a Make My Trip, Yatra or other travel agents to sell their property. And in doing so they offer 5% to 50% margins to these travel companies.
Hence in the end only 50-70% of what you pay goes to the hotel/resort and that infact defines and decides the real quality and standard of the hotel/resort you will get to stay in. In our case Springdale Heritage Resort was offered and booked by the travel agency and it was horrible place to go to. And even Senate was the Travel agency’s choice. Both were a disaster.

Travel agency offered us Shamrock in Munnar. After some research we changed it to Aranyaka which undoubtedly was the best resort in our trip. Hence the biggest learning is to stay away from the travel website and travel agents. If you still want to use them then select all the hotel/resorts on your own and simply ask them to make the bookings for you.

The bottom line is what is good for the travel websites and travel agents cannot and will not be good for you. They are focused on revenue and margin which has connection with your focus of an economic, relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

Room Tip: If you have no choice but to stay in Senate take rooms on the 4th floor and above. Best advise would...
