Seduced by the beautiful brochure showing misty woodlands, and promising ayurvedic spa, biking, trekking, woodland trekking, adventure activities, and peace, perfect peace - we went to Vana for a much-needed rest. "You will return rereshed and rejuvenated" the brochure promises. Hang on. There is no ayurvedic spa, forest, no bikes, no adventure activities etc. etc. No loungers or even chairs by the pool. We paid extra (in fact Rs5,000/-!!!) for a special Heritage room, and as the only guests at the place had the middle of three possible rooms in a row, in which were stored extra mattresses and an extra wardrobe. There were none of the promised antiques or pictures, but there was a wash basin from which waste water flowed directly over the floor, in a bathroom whose door did not close properly. The room was small and ill-equipped. The two staff were actually lovely and the food was great, but it took more than 2 hours to reach the table, by which time I was too tired to eat. Despite them having been warned ahead about my wheat allergy, the main breakfast offering was nevertheless toast. By night the place looked nice, with little lanterns, but by day we found an electric pylon in our front yard and the rest of the "lush acres" mostly claimed by a giant construction site, as they are putting in 60 more rooms to qualify eventually as a conference centre. A "woodland trek" meant reviewing the building site, tramping through wet knee-high grass and scrub. We were awake much of the night as it was Ganeshan's festival and there is a temple directly next door which celebrated all night long, in competition with another temple just up the busy road beside the rooms. In forty years of travelling I have never been the victim of such fraud. We cancelled our second night and eventually got a refund for that, but no refund for the first night - we even had to pay for the meals on the spot, at an exorbitant price. So we returned to Bangalore very frustrated and disappointed -a journey which takes a good two hours, not the 45 minutes claimed in the brochure! This place may be nice for a conference in two years time... until then, discount it totally! Unbelievable.
