“Good Executive Lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2013

The name “Portland Steak House” is a trifle misleading as the place has more to offer than just steaks.

Food & Drink
The regular menu has quite a wide variety of continental food – from steaks to pastas, lasagna, bakes and more. Portland offers a good “executive lunch” on weekdays. For around Rs 400, you get a choice of one starter/salad/soup, main course, dessert and a beverage.

The pepper chicken, chicken salad, and Caesar’s Salad are good starters. The BBQ chicken, with a side of mash potatoes and salad, is a nice main course if you’re not into steak. There is a nice range of steaks for those who like steak – I have heard very few complain about it being bad here.

The chef’s special apple pie is really good. Other nice desserts include the chocolate brownie and cappuccino cake. The restaurant serves only wine apart from a range of other non-alcoholic drinks.

The restaurant also offers a brunch on Sundays. Might be worth a try considering it’s a good bet on weekdays.

Staff & Service
The staff is pleasant. While the set lunch food is served very promptly, be prepared to wait a while longer if you choose to order from the a la carte menu.

Ambiance & Location
Conveniently located just off MG Road, the restaurant is great for those who live or work in the vicinity. The restaurant is spacious, quiet, clean, bright and airy. Parking could be a problem although the restaurant does have a little space reserved for its patrons’ cars in the front.

Value for Money
The “executive lunch” over weekdays is really good considering the quality and quantity of food. If you choose to eat from the a la carte menu, you could end up spending about Rs 800-1000 per head. That still isn't expensive by average Bangalore restaurant standards.

Tips for Diners
Go here for the “executive lunch” Monday through Friday. Reservations aren't necessary as the place isn't crowded generally.

“This is not a steakhouse!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2013

Attention travelers from other lands: This is not a “steakhouse” and you will not be served a “steak” - at least not if your frame of reference is the true steakhouses and churrascarias of the Americas.

I cannot explain the other reviews (which turned out to be quite misleading), but I can tell you about my experience: Having worked hard to find this place in what was basically a dark alley, we were the only ones in the room at 8:00pm on a Wednesday night. That should have been warning enough, but we soldiered on. Ordered a Porterhouse and a New York Strip – both cooked medium-rare. 45-minutes later served two pieces of shoe leather about ½ inch (12mm) thick, cooked solid all the way through and, for some reason completely unfathomable to me, cut across the top in a crosshatch pattern so that whatever juices there may have been had long before run out. “Mashed potatoes” clearly of instant dried flakes and, from the taste, made with the local water. Vegetables boiled to the point of dissolving and bread that could be used to hammer nails. I will admit, however, that the caramelized onions weren't bad
.
If you’re not a local, please do yourself a favor and stay away from this place. It’s not what you think. If you are a local, do yourself a favor and aspire to greater things. This may be meat, but it is not steak – I hope you will one day be able to experience the difference.

“Great Steaks”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2013

I was at this restaurant yesterday, and went there with a friend. He and his family strongly recommended the restaurant, and I was happy to go there with him.
The setting of the restaurant is superb, and the seating outside is great. The atmosphere was really very nice, and the service was excellent.
And then came the food. Corn done to tender perfection, excellent sides and a perfect steak. I would go so far to say that this is about the best steak that I have had in India.
This is really great. Highly recommended. I shall go there again on my next trip to Bangalore.
