Owner description: Ranganathittu is a bird sanctuary that can be visited throughout the year by bird lovers. Easily accessible from Bangalore, enroute to Mysore, visiting this place is a great option for both children and adults. Visit early in the morning and hire a boat. November heralds in the winter migrants who stay put until March, adding to the already numerous varieties of birds you can see here.

I believe bird watchers/ photographers would finish packing their gear and be on the move before reading the first couple of words :P.
Being in close proximity to Bangalore and Mysore it falls under the One day trip category. It's a pure delight for bird watchers and photographers. Loads of birds to watch. Boat ride for the fun lovers and for the hungry photographers. One can also opt for a personal boat, for a longer ride.
Oh there are crocs in water, you don't want them to play finders keeper with your hand :P.

For the ones visiting from Bangalore can go through Kanva Reservoir for an added bonus. Loads of birds to spot there.

Best Season: November - March I guess

We visited this place en route to Mysore from Bangalore so did not have as long as we would have wished for in this very special place. However we did greatly enjoy our short time there. We saw a variety of large birds at fairly close range and several crocodiles sunning themselves on rocks in the lakes We do feel that it is very miserly charging foreigners vastly more than Indians to visit attractions such as these considering we have paid out nearly £150 sterling each even to enter the country!

The sanctuary is a delight to the eyes. There are ample birds to watch in season, which I guess spans the winter months till early march. The boat ride experience is nice if you do see the birds up close. Certainly a very good photo opportunity place.

We had a wonderful time at the sanctuary. Thanks to the other reviews I had read on tripadvisor we made the Rs 1000/- boat trip. It was absolutely an wonderful experience to see the swallow nests!! Will recommend everybody to go to Ranganathittu and yes, dont miss the longer boat trip. The place more than makes up the long drive from Bangalore!

We visited the Bird sanctuary for the first time, and it was a nice experience .The boat ride was good and thrilling ,but a little scary cos of the crocodiles which swim nearby.Worth visiting. Some precautions to be taken on the boat ride is not to put your hand in the water and to use life jackets
