Owner description: Ranganathittu is a bird sanctuary that can be visited throughout the year by bird lovers. Easily accessible from Bangalore, enroute to Mysore, visiting this place is a great option for both children and adults. Visit early in the morning and hire a boat. November heralds in the winter migrants who stay put until March, adding to the already numerous varieties of birds you can see here.

“Good place that can be marketed better”

We visited this place to have a look at the birds around. Surprisingly except the boat ride, there was no way to have a good look at the birds or the crocodiles. We were lucky to find plenty of crocs in water and resting on the rocks. But once you are done with the boating there is nothing much to do. You can go around and walk the lake but that is not very well maintained.

They should plan something to indulge the kids, so that they would like to see and learn more about birds.

“Closest Birding spot which will never disappoint you”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2013

We come to Ranganathittu as often as 4-6 times a year. This year we did lesser owing to some schooling pressures which prevented my kids from being on these trips...

Among the attractions when you get on a boat-ride you must ask your boating guide to take you to the swallow nests which are towards the far end of the lagoon.

Do keep a look out for water-dogs (local name) / Otters as there are quite a few which can send a shiver down the spine of a well matured Mugger croc... incidentally you can also wait and watch to see if a mugger croc is out on a hunt and if things go well, would make a find photo-opp.

Around the pathways towards the entrance of the sanctuary, you can find a few good places for pelican nests close to the land.

A nice place for a visit en-route to Mysore or KRS, don't plan for a family outing/picnic here, as the food is very basic and not many options. Carry water and some small eats to ensure you stay hydrated on a warm day. Best time to visit this place and do the boat-ride is between 0930 and 1130 hrs. or between 1600 and 1730 hrs. This is when the sun in summer is tolerable, and it is good light for photography all through the year.

Let Tripadvisor know if this was helpful...or otherwise.

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2013 via mobile

As a photograher i could not spot many birds for my shutter bug but then the boat ride and the crocodile swimming next to your boat is once in a life time opportunity.
I felt one should go there early in the morning with your loved one and spend leisurly, peaceful , romantic time amidst the lake and the pelicans.
Worth a visit.

“One of the best which I have seen”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2013

My visit to Ranganathittu was quiet by chance when we stayed overnight at Srirangapatna (near Mysore) and came to know of the place which is only 5 kms from our hotel.

We drove into the sanctuary early morning at around 7AM and nobody was there at that time.
Luckily we found one boatman who offered us 1 hr boat ride and bird watching in the Cauvery.
We were amazed to find the birds (pelicans, cranes, kingfishers, herons, egret and what not) in abundance. Crocs were visible in the water swimming or under the sun. It was a remarkable sight. Morning light allowed us to to take snaps at high speed.

I would rate by overall experience as one of the best which I have encountered till. Came back at around 8:30PM. Post paid the park entry fees as the counter just opened at that time.

“Great to see birds in their natural habitat”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2013

It is a good visit for bird lovers. While we mainly saw ibis - white and black - probably because their season had not settled in but we can easily imagine the variety of birds that one would get to see here. A big surprise were those 4-5 crocs we saw in their natural world. This was first time we got to see live wild crocs and not on nat geo/animal planet. We were lot more amazed by crocs than birds to be honest. Please bring in a teleport lenses powered camera here.
