A lot of people I've spoken to have visited only the nearby villages of spangmik and man, which are filled with people and tents, adding to the noise, commotion and spoiling the natural beauty of the lake.
However drive further away and you will come across the Merak village which is about an hour drive from the start of the lake. The driver initially could refrain from taking you there, but do insist. The village has only 2 homestay options, however any local would accommodate you for a nominal amount. Live with these people and be a part of the ladakhi culture and hospitality.
The village is serene and at the foothills of snow clad peaks. The drive though long is worth for anyone who wants to experience nature and get away from people.
You can see a lot of vegetation in the form of bushes and trees in the village as some of it is protected by the J&K forest department.
Also there is a space observatory being constructed at a distance of 3 kms from the village.
We spend the night star-gazing in absolute silence and also witnessed the sun-rise. Go there for a full pangong experience
