“Friendly, homely hotel”

Oriental Guest House is a very friendly and cozy place. It is run by a family who live in the same premises, and it is nice to get a sneak peek into the Ladakhi way of life through them. The view from some of the rooms is breathtaking, but you need to specifically ask them for these rooms. We stayed at this hotel many times during a visit to Ladakh as and when we returned from visiting other places. The rooms we were assigned each time varied greatly from each other, both in terms of quality and size. There is hardly a bathroom without some leakage of water. So be sure to first take a look at the room being assigned to you. The rooms were otherwise generally comfortable and clean. But it would be great if the rooms were standardised and the quality maintained uniformly in all of them. The food is average, but there are tons of other options around the hotel and the family will happily make recommendations, so this did not pose a big problem. They have a lovely library and sitting area where you can spend chilly evenings with nothing else to do. I would go back to this place for the friendly staff and the cozy atmosphere they create.

Room Tip: Third floor mountain facing rooms

I have stayed there three times, in various situations (with a friend, with my husband, and alone). I love the location of being outside Leh and next to the Shanti Stupa. You have a variety of price points to choose between. The rooms are good and some have excellent views of the mountain range.

I love the Spanish omelettes and honey ginger lemon tea (without the tea). If you opt to stay for dinner, they are simple and are often served late. But the laid back restaurant service is normal for Leh. The staff there is actually really helpful and friendly.

The USP of this place is definitely its hosts. We stayed here in August 2011 and later I recommended this place to a friend, who visited in Sep 2012 and had a lovely experience. Its a bit far from the hustle and bustle of the main market area. But if you dont mind walking, you would definitely enjoy the peace and serenity of this place. You can also call a taxi by requesting at the reception.

I would love to stay there once again on my next trip and would recommend this place to all who are looking for a great value and service.

This is my 2nd time at the Oriental, the last being in 2007. The place has changed quite a bit, with a completely new wing of rooms. Comfortable, spacious, clean and thoughtfully designed with views of the landscape in mind.
The staff, headed by Ms. Phunsok is amazing and very customer-centric. Our group members suffered multiple stoppages along the way to Pangong-Tso lake, in a car arranged by the hotel, and the charges were promptly halved when we raised this point after we got back. No questions asked!
The food is simple, and tasty in keeping with the altitude and acclimatization needs. It is a mix of Indian and western cusines, and is very prompt.
The hotel itself is environment and health conscious - The vegetables are grown organically in the garden and there is hot water piped through to the rooms via an eco-friendly solar heating system.
There is Internet available at the reception at a cost, but is very fast and decently reliable - a stark contrast in Leh from even 3 years ago.

All this at a very nominal tariff!

I cannot recommend this hotel enough. This will now be my choice of hotel during my yearly trips to Ladakh.

Keep up the good work!

Room Tip: Anything in the top floor, if you can walk up 3 stories in the rarified air!

We stayed at the Oriental guest house between 10th and 14th September 2012. We originally were staying at Druk Ladakh for the initial couple of days of our trip but moved to the Oriental guest house on behest of our co-travelers whom we me had met on tripadvisor.com and were sharing transportation during the trip with.
The Oriental guest house is situate on a beautiful property and is very well managed by a family since 1987. It is located in the Changspa area right below the Shanti Stupa at a distance of about 1 KM from the Leh bazaar. The road from the guest house to the Leh bazaar is downhill and has a spread of eating joints and cafes, shops along the way.
It is a budget friendly hotel with 36 rooms spread across four floors. The rooms are large (approximately 18 ft. x 10 ft.), neatly maintained with a double bed and a 8 inch thick mattress. The linen is clean. The rooms also have a dressing table, almirah, chairs, table, table to keep luggage, lot of electric charging points and an LCD TV with satellite connection. The bathrooms are nice with toiletries like soap, shampoo sachets, hot water. The management at the guest house is also environment conscious which is apparent from the fact that they are using CFL lights in the rooms.
The rooms are so arranged that one gets a spectacular view of the snow clad mountains and Leh city from the bed and that makes for an astoundingly soothing start of the day as you wake up to such beautiful scenes.
The restaurant at the guest house has an visible kitchen which is hygienic and clean. The kitchen set up allows the guests to witness the cooking of food at all times which makes for an interesting setting. There is arrangement for purified drinking water through large RO systems installed here. The dining area is also quite lavish in terms of space with comfortable and relaxed seating arrangement. The temperature is controlled using 5 split AC units which are probably heating units. The vegetables used for cooking are mostly grown organically in their own vegetable garden. And to top it all, in spite of CP or MAP PLA, if you do not have your meals, you are not charged for it.
Breakfast is not served as buffet, rather order is taken ,items r freshly prepared. you can choose any items from a wide variety of regular, oriental,Spanish,Mexican,Ladakhi,Indian breakfast, u can have breakfast on sunny patio.
The guest house is owned and managed by third generation entrepreneurs, Mr. Dawa Tsering and Ms. Phunchok. These are extremely humble people with a simple motto of ‘Never say no to the customers’. The faith on their customers demonstrated by these people is phenomenal and words seem inadequate to describe it. In fact as part of the billing process on the last day, the only input to what all was ordered by the customer from the restaurant is taken from the customers themselves. We want to urge the tourists who will be visiting this haven in years to come to make sure that the faith displayed by the hotel management is justified and upheld.
The guest house also has a library and an internet connection in their office, net is out of order many times in leh. Yet another thing that stood about this guest house is that a lot of foreign tourist stay here.
In our opinion, this is a highly recommended budget friendly and yet a classy accommodation.

This is one of the best value for money hotels I have seen in the recent times. This hotel located just outside the city center away from all the noise. Since it is located at higher altitude (just below the shanti stupa rock), you get an excellent view of the city from the rooms. The staff were quite helpful in arranging cabs for local travel. We stayed here for 4 days. Though the food quality was ok, but choice was very limited.
