“My Stay”
Reviewed November 15, 2013

I stayed with my parents, wife & kids for 4 nights and our stay was memorable. If you get tired of the 3 star,5 star hotel routine and like heritage properties then THE DAK HERMITAGE is the place to be. I talked directly to Mr.Danish, owner of the place, and he sounded as a very direct and forthcoming person. It took us a while to soak in to the ambience of the enchanting bungalow. We needed 2 rooms, we were given the entire floor. Irfaan, was appointed as our man friday and was always there to take care of our needs, even lending us his cell phone, when our mumbai prepaid connections were not working. The buffet breakfast was simple but fresh and plentiful. I would like to stay here again if another kashmir trip works out for me. SHUKRIYAA Danish bhai.

My husband and I called on the same day to make our booking and got lucky - it was an amazing experience.

Sana and Danish make great hosts! Great company, informative, non-commercial, :) and humble people.

The place is easy to reach and very well connected with the rest of the city yet has the calm and peace around it. The 150 year old bungalow (made of stone and wood) has its own charm and spending time there is an experience in itself - beautiful approach (its a small bridge), sit outs (verandah's), spacious rooms, good quality bedding (keeps you adequately warm), and most importantly clean.

It will not be fair if I don't mention that we were sharing the bungalow with a bollywood star and his family. I was amazed how the owners managed to maintain their privacy and at the same time took good care of us (made our stay as comfortable as it would have been for the star). Hats of to the lovely couple who got the star his biggest gift of privacy!

Not to miss a lunch/ dinner next door at Hat Trick.

Highly recommend spending a couple days here.

A lovely 150 yr old Bungalow, trees, garden, spacious rooms, bathrooms combined with warm hospitality..could not ask for more.
Perfect for holidays with family and friends, we booked the entire place - 3 bedrooms, so enjoyed the entire floor to ourselves including a living room, Pantry and the lovely Verandahs.
Thank you Danish and Sana, it was a pleasure staying with you and hope to repeat the experience again!

I stayed at the Dak Hermitage with my three year old. The rooms (and beds) are big and roomy and so comfortable when traveling with kids who need a bit of a run around. The loos are modern: a very happy surprise considering the old world charm the house and rooms have retained. The owners (who stay downstairs) are warm and welcoming and were very accommodating given our needs. Breakfasts can be local or continental (suitable for an adventurous mom and a 'sunny side up for the rest of her life' kid. And their staff is very efficient. All in all completely recommended when traveling on a lazy holiday with kids: an oxymoron(!) but totally fitting of my experience at the Hermitage!

I travelled with my sis and our 3 little girls and stayed at Dak for 5 days in Srinagar, a heritage bungalow overlooking the Jhelum. It is really central - just a boat ride across to hit down town markets and a short walk from the tourist reception center and taxi stand. The hosts are a lovely family and all of them (including their impish boy who happily spent his play time with our girls) were most warm and gracious and treated us more as house guests than paying ones. They helped in booking cabs, ordering food etc.
The rooms are spacious and bathrooms too, with comfortable beds and warm, snug quilts. They had thoughtfully placed hot water bottles in our beds in the evening which was a pleasant and welcome surprise. Just what we needed after our cold and weary day out in the city.
The guest house serves breakfast but other meals can be ordered and home delivered. The house keeper too is only too happy to get local breads and food from the Hat trick Cafe, which is just a hop away and has a bakery full of delectable stuff. Their restaurant serves some good Kashmiri and North Indian fare - all very reasonably priced.
Kashmir is truly worth a visit and the Dak is a perfect place to stay especially for families and couples. It's small, private and it's service is extremely gracious.

The Dak Hermitage occupies the top floor of a charming, 100+ year-old two-story colonial bungalow made of stone and wood. If you're looking for a "boutique hotel" experience in Srinagar at reasonable rates, and away from the touristy hubbub near the lake, this is a great place. It's situated at the edge of a quiet residential colony, and yet is on the Jhelum river, walking distance from "downtown" and the old city beyond, and a 20-minute walk from the lake (or a 5 minute bus-ride away). The museum is also nearby.

The entrance to the rooms is via a gangway that leads from road-level straight to the top floor and to a large balcony surrounded by greenery. The interiors are well-maintained and bathrooms are modern. This isn't a commercial hotel - more of a Mom & Pop setup, and has a homey feel, which is accentuated by the balcony, large common sitting room (with a real olde world colonial feel!) and personable proprietors, who live below on the ground floor. Unfortunately, their lovely lawn is not accessible to guests, but we can look down upon it from above!

There is a market nearby for everyday needs, and for those who like to explore the city/surrounding areas using public transport, there is a stop for the ubiquitous "mini buses" a minute's walk away, taking you anywhere in Srinagar and then beyond in the valley.

In short, if you're looking for a charming, quiet and homey place to stay in Srinagar, in a lovely old house that is still centrally located, this is an excellent bet!
