It was our 2 night stay Srinagar this Diwali and our lodging at Taj Vivanta was perfect with a view of snow clad Zabarwan mountain on one side and the Dal Lake in the valley below!

We were four and had hired an Innova Taxi chauffeured by Md Akbar Mallik ( ph 9596595051) who had driven us two days before to Gulmarg.Md Akbar was a wonderful guide and took us to Lal Chowk, Dal Lake, Nagina Lake, Hazrat Bal Mosque, the Mughul Gardens- Nishat and Shalimar. We had the finest photo moments at the Mughul Gardens which were resplendent in colors of fall. Md Akbar was ready with correct suggestions on best places to have Kahva (Kashmiri Tea with Saffron and 10 other spices), Snacks,Dinners as also best places to shop for Pashmina, Dry Fruits,Carpets,etc..And all this without being overbearing and allowing us to enjoy our activities; and at the same time ready with his car at short notice!

On our last morning, I requested him to take me to the Shankracharya Hill immediately after breakfast and abracadabra! He was at the reception ready with his car and a warm greeting with a smile. The Shiva Temple on the hill at about 1000 mts was a truly sacred and austere temple- much like its deity- Lord Shiva! Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have meditated in a cave here and it was almost a purifying moment to be inside that cave !

The temple is under care of the Archeological Survey of India. It is believed to have first built as a place of worship more than 200 years ago; although reconstructed in 1800s. The octagonal platform in stone and the stone shikhara reminded me of the Kedarnath Temple. I would say it is also a must see attraction- even if you have to ascend final 300 mts on a winding stairway of about 270 steps!

Md Akbar informed us that his son Malik Waseem ( Ph 7051425949) also drives a taxi and loves to chauffeur tourists in Kashmir.

Its a long way up the stairs, you have to climb 250 steps to reach to the temple. They don't even allow you to take your camera or mobile phones due to security reasons. So you cant take any pictures. We took only about 30-40 minutes to visit this place as there is nothing much to see. If you are running short on time you can give this place a miss.

It is a modest climb. The steps are a bit high. However once you get there you are simultaneously in the company of history and beauty.
