“Bustle and peace share space here”
Reviewed September 8, 2013

The best way to see the lake and the amazing life all on and around it, is to hire a shikara. These colourful gondolas glide slowly along the water's surface, being paddled by a one-man crew. There are distinct areas to the lake – such as the touristy bit near the houseboats, the shopping area, the agriculture area and the large part where the lake opens up and no houseboats are found. I believe there is a floating market in the early mornings too, but we didn't have a chance to see that on this visit.

Everything happens on the lake. Tourists laze on the shikaras taking pictures of the lake, themselves and you; vendors ply their trades in shikaras – the shop will come to you at the weave of a hand, with everything from memory cards, clothes and food to cigarettes and even photography services complete with 'traditional' outfits for dressing up.

The bird life around the lake is pretty good, in a couple of days we saw kingfishers, kites, moorhens, herons, egrets and grebe but to name a few. The skies above the water are full of the elegant soaring black kites, with black-bellied terns swooping down to catch their supper.

There are no end of shopping opportunities, as well as the floating stores that will come to you, parts of the canal system is lined with shops selling fashions, food and souvenirs on the banks. Even cafés and restaurants can be found in the backwaters.

Dal Lake really is the jewel of Srinagar – a peaceful place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. To fully experience all that the lake has to offer, a stay on a houseboat is a must.

“Dal lake- Lifeline of Kashmir”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

Was amazed to see that theres a different life within this lake...with all the shops and markets...place has a different aura..
What lingers in memory still is how each person uses his own boat to come across to the road every time...at any hour..Kashmiri women too are no exception...reminds me of how we drive bikes/cars in any other city...shikara ride is a must do activity especially till Char Chinar..have some Kehwa enroute and a little bit of shopping in shikara...takes the adventure to new heights

Dal Lake is a nice place to relax and enjoy. Enjoy the shikara ride but make sure you never buy any thing from the floating market. You can always buy things you want to eat.

“Dal lake is about many aspects of life on waters.”
Reviewed September 5, 2013

Count it as a ZERO if your Srinagar trip does not include a ride on Shikara (local boats) in the Dal lake. What a beautiful sight it is to see houseboats lined up on the other side of the lake while you take a slow, nicely-paced ride on a Shikara. The lake is clean and well maintained and a one-hour Shikara ride gives you a sense of delight to travel in a floating world which has everything in it- be it houses, shops, markets, restaurants etc.
