Excellent views - the best in Srinagar. Excellent selection of high quality food, however, more of Kashmiri cusines would be welcomed. Great place for kids with adventures in near by places. Wonderful rooms, excellent bathrooms - very large, up to date, modern. Internet access was available though was charged extra - I feel this should provided free in any hotel globally.
Highly recommeded for the family or couple.

The hotel is on a hill top with some lovely views of the peaks and the Dal lake.
The rooms are cottage style and very spacious with balconies.
The restaurant overlooks the lake as well and its good to start your day with breakfast taking in the views.
Food is average, stay comfortable, views awesome and service excellent.
You are very well taken care of while you are there.
Trust them to plan your days for you and they do a good job!

Room Tip: Ask for the upper rooms forgetter views or the ones below for a step out into the lawns.

Heard about the new girl in town - and decided to stay here on our 3rd visit to this beautiful city. On the previous occasion, we had stayed at the Lalit Grand Palace. And what can I say? This latest addition from the Taj bandwagon is a sure winner!!!

We stayed at their Deluxe rooms for 2 nights. The property is situated on a hillock giving you a bird’s eye view of the Dal Lake, Nagin Lake and Srinagar city, with the Zabarwan Mountains encasing it on 3 sides. All rooms are lake facing so you are assured of waking up to a beautiful sight first thing in the morning! It’s a good 5-7 minute drive from the banks of the Dal Lake to the property. The approach road to the property is not too becoming (at certain points) and just for a moment I was wondering if I had made the right choice. But my fears were allayed only too quickly! :))

Rooms: The rooms are spacious, well-furnished and classily done up with full length windows to give you an amazing unobstructed view. You will see the Dal lake come to life at dawn and see Srinagar shimmer like a little jewel at night!! Imagine yourself in the clouds and having Srinagar city and the Dal Lake at your footsteps! U can be in bed all day and just keep looking out of the window!!! Bathrooms are fantastic - The deluxe room bathrooms are huge and what you would expect in their palace properties!!! Delightful :))) All rooms have a lovely private sit-out. Upper floor preferred as it offers a better view and the privacy too. There are traces of having hurriedly finished the rooms, but not something that the hotel can still not look into and rectify. The superior rooms are in the main building of the hotel, the only difference being that the rooms and bathrooms are smaller but having the same amenities. It was snowing while we were at Srinagar, but our rooms were warm, so long as we drew the curtains at night.

We noticed that the swimming pool was more like a wading pool, not that it bothered me in winter. The lobby is nicely done up too.

Food: Latitude, their all-day dining restaurant is beautifully done up in black and white - open on 2 sides with a terrace outside, with one side overlooking the Zabarwan mountain range and the other overlooking the Dal Lake. Breakfast was the usual Taj breakfast - excellent South Indian variety, eggs / parathas / pancakes / dosas to order. Efficient and attentive service. However, the cheese platter was conspicuous by its absence and the choice of dishes on the buffet was lackluster (can't handle pav-bhaji for breakfast please!) Our dinner experience was fantastic! We ordered for some Kashmiri delicacies (chicken, nadru yakhni) and it was made to perfection! Naan was superb. Portions are small. Once the staff realized how much of a fan my husband is of Kashmiri food, the chef quickly put together a plate of rishta (the famous kashmiri wazwaan dish of meat balls in red gravy), although it’s not on the menu and even though we had finished our meal. Its gestures like this which touch your heart, and make you want to keep coming back!!! Thank you Siddhant for taking such good care and thank you Chef Abbas and Chef Shahbad (hope I have spelt the name correctly) for the most lip-smacking kashmiri food! We also enjoyed the food at Jade Dragon - the chinese restaurant. Do try the pastry shop in the lobby - excellent! In-room dining was efficient too. The Bar was still not operational, but it’s a matter of time before that is up too.

The front office staff is well-trained and is happy to chat up and guide you. Nadia, Imran and the rest of the front desk staff were most helpful and gave us insights into this beautiful city, in a way which only a local could. We asked for where we could get local kebabs, and thanks to them - had a great local authentic kebab meal.

Much to our surprise, the hotel was almost full. And this is supposed to be winter - the lean period! The hotel restaurant was buzzing with affluent local families out for a great Sunday evening meal. On Saturday evening that we were there, we noticed another celebratory dinner in one of the Banquet halls. Clearly, this hotel has caught the fancy of the people of Srinagar, and it’s alive and buzzing!!

Now for the million dollar question - Taj Vivanta or Lalit Grand Palace?! Here are my thoughts:

Rooms: Size and amenities of rooms - both are equivalent. Both offer you a private sit-out (Lalit 1st floor rooms don’t have a private sit-out). Bathrooms - Taj is way better! Lalit bathrooms are much smaller and don't have a bath-tub in the new wing. Moreover, in winter at least, the Taj room seems to be managing the cold better than Lalit. The Lalit ground floor rooms open onto the most amazing and vast lawns. Taj ground floor rooms also open onto lawns, but the lawns are nowhere as vast as the Lalit grounds. But where the Taj rooms truly take the prize is the view from the room – it’s simply out of this world!!! Although the Lalit is situated at the banks of and opposite the Dal Lake, it does not offer a clear unobstructed view of the lake as there are beautifully lined Chinar trees on the hotel grounds, blocking the lake view. Not sure of the view from the 1st floor as we had stayed on the ground floor.

Location, approach and property exterior: In this regard, the Lalit is a clear winner. Lalit is situated in a better locality (wide promenade entrance, beautiful drive through, 10 minute walk to the Dal lake jetty), has a grand entrance, vast lawns, imposing heritage property structure and the look and feel of a Palace! The lobby and their restaurant Chinar is quintessentially Kashmiri. I would think that the Lalit would make a great summer property with their beautiful lawns and flowers in full bloom. Winters would be more apt at the Taj, with the snow-clad Zabarwan mountains so up and close!

Hospitality and food: The Taj undoubtedly, most definitely! The training, the attitude, the culture of the Taj (where you will rarely hear the word "NO") clearly stands out!!! Cannot say the same for the Lalit though. The Taj restaurant menu offers a wider choice and the staff will be delighted to make you special dishes which are even off the menu!! Try doing that at the Lalit and you will be sorely disappointed!

To conclude, I'd say that the Lalit is a grand, iconic historical property but in the hands of the wrong management. The Taj is clearly a better managed property - more professional in their approach and with warmer and more caring staff. The Taj stands out with its legendary hospitality and stunning views, and there is no doubt that I will most DEFINITELY return here again!!!

The Vivanta by Taj has finally put Srinagar on the world tourist map - and that says it all!!!

Room Tip: All rooms have a lake view. Choose the 1st floor rooms - unobstructed views and better privacy.

Located on a hill top you get a parnomic view of the city. One side is the frozendal lake and on the other the great Himalayas covered with snow. Great choice of food specially for vegetarian like me. Must try the Chinese specialty restaurant for dinner in the hotel serves authentic Chinese food made according to your taste.
Again as always the staff at Taj are always warm and very friendly and ready to help.
I highly recommend staying at this hotel .

We spent 3 nights here from Jan 15 to 18, 2012. Whle the location is AWESOME and size of the Deluxe rooms/bathrooms is expansive, the rest is a serious blot on the TAJ brand.

For a new property, barely 6-8 months old this is what we faced - the bath tub leaked water all over the bathroom, the heating did not work (outside temp was below zero), complaint about additional heater in room not working was not attended for 24 hours, then when it was supposedly fixed, the electrical system "tripped" - twice - when we tried to connect the heater. The glass door to the balcony let in a generous draft of chilled air into the room, the bathrooms somehow were not connected to the heating system. Finally after 2 nights, our room was changed. Thankfully, the heating in the new room worked.

When we raised these and the issue of why, for our complimentary city tour, they were giving us a car that could not handle the inclement weather and snow of last 24 hours, the General Manager (Mr. Vikas) was totally insensitive and un-apologetic. He in fact used the extreme weather as the excuse to justify what we were facing.

The Deluxe rooms we stayed in are not part of the main building. So each time for a meal (and if you are in the hotel, you have NO CHOICE except to eat-in since the hotel is far away from anything else) we had to dress up and walk in sub-zero temperatures and falling snow to get food. The main building was about 1000 ft away but to get to the paved walkway, we had to trudge through about 25 feet of foot-deep snow - all without any cover!!

The overall finish of the property also is poor. As said earlier, the bath tub leaked, the plus in the bath tub didn't work, the shower leaked water into the WC area, the glass door didn't seal the wind, broken stones in the Latitude restaurant are only a few things.

The food also was below par - at both the operating restaurants - the multi-cuisine Latitude and the Chinese restaurant.

Overall, our expectations of a Taj and a $200+ per night hotel were totally and truly belied. One saving grace was the genuine effort some junior staff and duty managers were making.

As this is Srinagar, luxury options are limited, but we will try the Lalit next time.
