i have visited shri vaishno devi temple about 12 times over a period of 15 years .mataji has been very kind to me and my family . For the 1st time i took my wife and my 10 yr old son to the temple . i had been trying to book the helicopter (from the base to the top around 10 kms plus additional walking fro around 2 kms) since over 2 months . The site is either out of order or it says no availability. Once i reached KATRA , i found out that the whole exercise of booking on the Net is just a farce , the locals told me that the people at the shrine board have formed a nexus with private tour operators and charge as musch as 5000Inr for the journey(official charge is INR 1200) The horse breeders have made a cartel and they charge 3-4 times the official amount .The entire complex is in very bad shape thanks to the corruption which is a typical feature of indian life and even GOD is a victim here . I hope mataji punishes those who are involved in the scam .

Go there only if you are a believer. The journey is both tiring and fun depending on your co-hikers. Clean enough and well managed for a Hindu Pilgrimage site. Lots of fesh mountain water taps, cafes, food and fruit stalls enroute the main shrine. Of course you could fly in a chopper from Jammu but walking it is fun. Jai Mata Di!

Its a very holy place for the Hindus who believe that only when the Goddess beckons you, you get the opportunity to visit this place. It is also believed that the Goddess answers your sincere prayers whole-heartedly there.
Its a long climb of about 14 km from the foothills to the top.Rest areas and washrooms are aplenty and they are clean n maintained well. Food stalls also keep you well-fed. Rooms are available at certain platforms but they need to be booked in advance. The accommodation is very affordable, neat and clean.
The place is called KATRA and is full of hotels n lodges that cater to the needs of all classes of people. Some are really good bargains and pocket friendly.
One could also use the helicopter service which is incredibly cheap. But advance bookings need to be made for the same which is available online for foreign tourists n NRIs.
The visit is worth it. The place is very sacred and it is very important that the sanctity of the place be maintained by one and all. No non-veg foodstuff and leather goods are allowed. Better not to carry any of those and no plastic bags please.Great place to get the blessings of the Almighty!
