Description: Fat Plate Cafe is a family-run eatery located on the left bank of the River Beas. The cafe is a brick & wood building constructed over a 3 bigha plot of land, surrounded by lush green lawns and its very own herb and vegetable gardens. The cafe seats 80 covers, the seating is divided between the indoor lounge, the veranda and the two level of lawns. The cafe was born in 2012, promoted by the Gurung family who share a deep passion for food. Anubhav Gurung, the son, is the chef and in-charge of the kitchen. The food is the soul of the cafe; the menu is based around European and north Indian specialties. The chef believes in following the traditional cooking techniques and giving them his own flavour. The menu is based on the seasonality of ingredients and the chef works closely with his butcher and his gardener to finally decide what’s going to be on the menu. Rarrah meat, roast leg of lamb, bacon wrapped chicken with plum sauce and the mustard chilli trout are some of the top selling items. The cafe bakes its own breads and most of the herbs and the salads are grown on the premises. Most of the ingredients are sourced locally and are bought from the farmers directly.

Great scenic set-up but slow service. The food was good but the helping of some dishes was small. Could add some more to the menu.

The Fat Plate came with great recommendations but on the day we got there, their main chef/son/owner was away and the other chef was unwell. Lunch took very long and we left at 4pm as we understood the restaurants problem ( some of their supplies had not come in from Chandigarh etc)and waited patiently as each dish took its time.

We went back 2 days later( after phoning and confirming that the chef was back & well and that the kitchen was functioning properly). We were the only customers on a wet rainy day and the service was terrible. We were 7 people and our food took over an hour and a half to come to the table- the soups came 'after' the main course was over and each dish came one at a time. So, while some were ready for dessert the others were still waiting for their main !
The owners came in much later and when we spoke to the owner ( Mrs.Gurung) she was most unapologetic and started screaming at her kitchen staff and asking where her son ( the chef ) was !!! She later apologised in a very taunt-like manner as if it was our fault that the service was shoddy saying that they were just a small establishment ( but there were so many people in the kitchen and forgetting that we were the only people there)
Poor service can spoil any restaurant however good the food may be.

Had lunch here almost every other day during my 10 day stay in Manali. The food is excellent, especially the trout dishes and very well presented. The ambiance is nice and cozy, and the owners are very friendly :)
Big thumbs up to this place.

Imagine sitting out in a warm sunny garden, surrounded by spring flowers, and eating lunch. Or still better, sitting out on the lawns amidst the flowers, looking at the snow peaks in the distance, and eating a quiet dinner, as the evening shadows lengthen into the darkening night. A lazy dog ambles over to flop on the lawn, besides your chair, and the only other sound is the distant roar of the Beas river. And just in case of a sudden summer shower, you can sit in the wooden verandah or even in the cheerful restaurant which has glass windows to frame the landscape outside.
The peace and the beauty of the place is so overwhelming, that food is almost an afterthought.
The chef is the owners' son, trained at the Taj Catering school at Aurangabad, and does justice to his training, The owners, Mrs. and Mr. Gurung, an endearing couple, walk up to your table, and if you invite them, pull up a chair and sit down to chat. They take pride in the fresh vegetables which they grow in the very garden where the restaurant is located. The Caesar salad we ordered was from salad leaves plucked from the garden after we had ordered. You cant have it fresher than that.
The Continentalfood was excellent. The portions were modest in size, but quite satisfactory. (When you get to my age, you are no longer concerned about the quantity. You know its the quality that matters). The fish I ordered was a fillet of Trout, pan-seared in a butter and garnished with celery, served with crisp fries. My wife had the breast of chicken, grilled, and served with barbeque sauce, with vegetables on the side. The whole meal was washed down with fresh watermelon juice.
The only thing missing was a glass of good wine. The restaurant has applied for a license to sell liquor, but until its granted, its fresh fruit juice.
There is an Indian food menu also available, and if the Continental food we ate is the standard with which one must judge, I'm sure it will be excellent. But that's for the next visit.
