“Royal visit to Royal House of SSG”
Reviewed August 1, 2013

This was the palace built by the King of Vadodara, Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III. This was designed and constructed by Charles Mant. The art & collection of Royal family is superb. The collection of wepons is also very nice. The ticket for per person is Rs.150/- it sounds high but when you enter you will understand it is worth. They will give you an automatic audio guide (currently in 3 language : Hindi, English & Marathi) for visit and the voice guide will explain you each & everything in nice detail. Must visit this place.

“A Palace of Indian Idealism for the Royals”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

1890 grand indo saracenic facade of great stature and impression awaits you all in the banyan city cultural capital of Gujarat in form of Gaekwadi grandeur and vision behind this largest palace compound in India-The Lukshmi Vilas Palace.HRH the late Royal Shri Sayaji rao Gaekwad had it built with the advice of then advisors to create employment to artisans and establishing the grandeur of the then Baroda State.Architect was Charles Mantt but the vision seems to be of The advisers and Royal King himself.700 acres of Greens has many facilities apart from a closed down Zoo and a Mini railway station,to a huge cricket ground and HQ of Cricket of Baroda which has its own national Ranji team. The palace entry is through the gate between the Gun and Golf Entry and the main royal gate in front of cross roads.Take a ticket and enter the palace from the entry on the Other side of the seen facade. They give you a recorded commentary on a ipod each spot being numbered.Spend some time appreciating the gardens and the main entry ,statue of Mosess' Mother carrying him on head like Vasudeva did for baby krishna and many more huge and rare artifacts statues of Bulls and Stags etc in bronzes around the palace.look at it from main entry site from a green mound of the sunken white garden. On your right is ladies qaurter designed in Hindu temple style, middle is the islamic style domes and arches style and in between you seen European spire of the church like tower of seven stories reaching the skies. On far left end you see multiple smaller domes of central asian style under which is the most divine and royal central hall-The durbar hall.Spend more time here and see the elegant wooden work ladies galleries and awesome three stained glass work which is the pinacle of Indian wisdom to the Royals in form of Mother and a child-krishna milking the cow in a village home and two more. The next mural of finest stain glass art you will see any where in the world shows a icon of divine Ram laxamana seeta trio as a perpetual warning to the Decider of fates the KING to be so just as the great God king of the Indian legends. The last stain glass mural shows Krishna the Guide of Battle of Kurukshetra mahabharata story of how to rule and take side of the Right against the wrongs all the time. The hall has small busts of all Greats even non royals on whose foundations the Gaekwad rule was established in this central Gujarat area.Armory and many other spots are open but most other quarters are private no entry zones. Even outside the great hall you see a great wall mural .The hall has seen great Musical evenings from stalwarts of Indian Music till recently when it was closed for public programs.Do not miss the Palace HRH Fatehsingh museum to see collections of these royals and original Raja Ravi Verma Indian classics.Enter from Other last gate after exit and taking a left turn under the new Manjalpur over bridge which you do not climb but take the side left road to take a U turn to get into the Forth last gate to reach beautiful Museum premises and Moti baug cricket grounds with a great Banyan tree behind it and peacocks and great trees all around.

“Splendid architecture. A very special place in history.”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Incredible architecture. Slightly crumbling at the edges but still splendid. The Darbar hall is beautiful. There is a museum which although a little decrepit has wonderful exhibits. There are no real formal gardens as such so the surrounding green areas are the golf course and the trees.

It is without doubt the most beautiful piece of architecture in Vadodara.
