“Quiet and Efficient”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

Gir Birding Lodge is a relief as it is quiet, green and bordering the National park itself. So 4 stars for location and ambience. (Other resorts around its periphery generally looked garish)

Service is excellent, though we would have liked it if there was a little bit more of personal touch at the beginning, with someone in charge coming across to say "hi.. is everything ok?" sort of thing. But cant find fault with the staff who made sure everything worked like clockwork. No real complaints here.

Other than the safari's, the path leading down to the rivers edge presents an excellent birding walk, which is right opposite the lodge gate and runs along the side of the national park.

Avoid weekends and holidays as much as you can. The tourist rush goes crazy and safari's that are supposed to be pre-booked weeks in advance, may suddenly become "wait listed" and cancelled. Not very clear how this system works in Gir. I suspect there is no real "advance booking" or everyone just becomes a little greedy when the demand peaks :)

In terms of rooms, the deluxe rooms are well worth it, if you can afford to pay more. I would say they are a must if you have children in the room with you, as the the std rooms are a bit cramped even for 2 people. The view is also better from the deluxe rooms.

In terms of wildlife, Gir has plenty more than just lions on offer. It has a high density of leopards, golden jackals, herbivores and several bird species. So you may want to instruct your guide & driver that you are not there just to chase lions, lest they end up rushing from one rescue van/tracker to another in a bid to show you the "sher"

The roads from Ahmedabad to Gir are pretty good, being 4 lane most of the way and 2 lane after Jetpur. A fast driver can get there in about 6 to 7 Hrs.

Room Tip: In terms of rooms, the deluxe rooms are well worth it, if you can afford to pay more. I would say th...

The first thing which comes to your mind while talking about Gir Birding Lodge is 'Being Real Close to Nature'. This is perhaps the only resort in Sasan Gir which is really close to the national park - in fact the resort and the national park share the same boundary wall. Isn't it amazing?

The resort is built in midst of a mango orchard. We stayed at a Deluxe Cottage which we liked in all aspects. It was clean. The aesthetic of the room was just perfectly blended with the flavor of the jungle. The staffs were really helpful and the manager, Mr. Pradeep was cordial too.
In the evening, you would be able to see a lot of birds in their compound itself as it is full of mango trees. It should a birdwatcher's paradise. In fact, apart from the Asiatic Lion (which is of course the main attraction), you would be able to see a lot of birds in Gir National Park. I haven't seen these many variety of birds in any other national parks in India.

The only thing which I didn't like about the management is the safari arrangements. We had booked 4 jungle safaris which they only helped us to book in advance. But I'm sorry to say that in all 4 occasions, our safari vehicle came quite late to pick us up. As there is one entry gate to the national park right next to the resort, I could see the other safari jeeps entering the national park while we used to wait for our vehicle. So in all the safaris, we entered the national park quite late than others. I think the management should make sure that these types of things don't happen.

But overall, I feel, it is the best option in Sasan Gir if you want to enjoy nature.

The Gir Birding Lodge was a good place to stay and very close to the jungle. We hired a delux cottage, which was very spacious and clean. The lodges are situated in the middle of some sort of plantation fields so when you walk at the end of these fields, you reach a wall. If you were to climb over the wall you'd be in the Gir Jungle and if you are lucky you'd bump into a lion. Luckily for us, the lions were located more in the depth of the jungle.
There are 2 things I would like to emphasise on this review:
1. The hospitality of the staff at this place is just unbelievable. They were absolutely amazing, really looking after all their guests. The food they prepared were just great, like home cooking. Thank you to Amit Kumar and crew.
2. We were rather disappointed with the arrangements for the safaris. The Indian Forest Department is a rather complex entity and therefore very hard for a Londoner like me to understand. I had asked the hotel to book my safaris in advance and therefore expected everything to be booked before arriving to the hotel. However, the day we arrived, we were told that they couldn't get us a morning safari but would get an afternoon safari (which was fine). However, was told on the actual day, an hour before that we didn't have a safari at all that day and should do a trip to Devalia Park (which is a open top bus safari tour that guarantees you sighting of a lion - more like a compound). This was not what I had anticipated and we had wasted a day waiting around. (It's hard to explain to a 5 year old boy why we are not going to go on the jeep to see a lion when one has been telling him that we came her to do safaris.) I believe this is something Mr Kumar should specify clearly in his emails to his foreign visitors, emphasizing that the advance permits for safaris may not be given to you at all, hence one should be factoring this in their itenary. The next day we had an early safari (6.30am) and an afternoon one. However, even for the afternoon one which Mr Kumar confirmed the night before, where still being debated by the Forest Department. We only knew we were going on the afternoon safari 30min before, which to me is bad planning and leaves people anxious. The main reason you are at that lodge is being able to do the Jeep Safaris. Having spoken to other families there, I would recommend booking the hotel directly with the hotel but confirming the safari's only with the travel agents (HQ's in Delhi) to guarantee your specified safaris. Luckily for us, on the last safari we saw 8 lions, and 3 which only walked 200 metres away from our jeep, so well worth the hassle of arguing with Mr Kumar. It was well worth the experience for my family, escpecially my 5 year old son.

Dear Esteemed Guest,

Thank you for having spared time and reviewing our property on Trip Advisor.
We are delighted to know that you enjoyed your stay at our property.

Thank you for your appreciation for our team and our hospitality. We hope you took back good memories from your Safari where you and your little on saw the Asiatic Lions of Gir.

Please pre-book your safaris either with us or directly on Gir lion website.

The safaris are in great demand. Only 50% of the safari quota is available to book online and the other 50% is sold over the counter. To avail safaris directly in Gir one need to cue up early in the morning outside the park to secure the ticket which can be unnerving. Once your tickets are booked you may book the 4WD vehicle with us. In effect you will pay for the safari ticket, the 4WD vehicle and the fee for the guide who will be assigned to accompany you from the forest department.

We eagerly look forward to your return and assure you of our best services.

Birding Lodge is sharing common wall with the area of "Lion".. During our stay we could hear lion roaring the entire night, if that excites you. Staff there is very helpful and cordial. Rooms are good, we were with kids and stayed in standard cottages but if you need more comfort i would recomment delux cottages which are very nice in designs and interior and have larger space. Food served is of good quality and typically roti, sabzi, dal, rice, soup, sweet. If you are nature lover, you will love the place.

Room Tip: go for deluxe cottages and avoid room that are there in main building.

Spent a week at Gir Birding Lodge with an Indian Naturalist friend in November 2012. The team at Gir Birding Lodge were very welcoming, warm, genuine, friendly and accommodating and could not have done more to make us feel part of the Gir experience. The accommodation is unpretentious and clean and absolutely right for a wildlife experience. It is made up of little cottages named after birds (we were fantail and pitta) and situated right at the park gates. On more than once occasion we abandoned a meal to rush to the gate when we heard alarm calls, twice to see the backside of leopard disappearing into the undergrowth! One even cross the lodge grounds surprising the women working in the grounds! We missed that one. We heard lions roaring in the evenings and all sorts of alarm calls ... very different and a wonderful change to the sounds I usually wake to in the UK. We were extremely comfortable and well looked after.
We had some superb sightings int he park, thanks to the support from Pradeep and his team who even ironed out an issue we had with one of the forest guides for us. We were privileged to be the first to see a lioness bring out her four tiny cubs just 5 weeks old for the first time and meet them again the following morning when they struggled to walk along the road. We had some close encounters where lions walked right next to us and others where they sat in the road and almost challenged us to try and get past. We had cat sightings (lions or leopards on 11 of our 12 drives). We had a magnificent sighting of a leopard sitting just a few meters from us on a rock on the side of the road (pity that some of the Forest Dept underlings do not know how to behave around wildlife and one in particular when trying to give his guest a photo opportunity (and showing off) frightened off the cat). We also had some magnificent bird sightings and it was wonderful to see many of the local guides and drivers enthusing and promoting the park and its surrounds in such a positive way. Naturally some were better than others in reading the pug marks, forest sounds and some told wonderful stories of their encounters in the past.
I would highly recommend Gir Birding Lodge as a sanctuary and a great place to encounter the Lions of Gir and other wildlife.
Attached a few photographs of the wildlife we encountered during our time.
