Description: 'Agashiye' in Gujarati means on the terrace. This beautiful restaurant is spread over two huge terraces are inter-connected by a smaller one that houses a small wooden cottage. At Agashiye, the food is freshly prepared, a lot of it in the terrace kitchen where you can see it. Our attempt is to retain the distinct flavours of the ingredients and we use both spices and oil sparingly. The menu at Agashiye changes daily and varies seasonally too, so an item that you particularly liked during a previous visit may not be there on the menu. Though we hope you'd find another favourite! The staff at Agashiye comprises mostly of men from neighboring villages. During dinner, they will guide you to the waiting area where you will be served juice and starters. You will be informed when your table is ready. During lunch, you are seated at your table right away. The food is served in a kansa thali immediately on being seated at the table. The meal starts with a choice of Indian breads and ends with rice. Servings are unlimited. The staff has been instructed not to constantly hover around you and yet be attentive. In case you have a specific requirement, a supervisor will be there to assist you. Please don't be surprised if you are served a non-Gujarati dish or hear non-Indian music at Agashiye. It is neither an ethnic nor a theme restaurant. It is meant to be a dining experience in a contemporary Gujarati home.Agashiye can be booked for parties of up to 400 people with a buffet setting.

Dining under the stars atop an old mansion in the heart of one of India's most fascinating cities....the only way you cold improve on that would be to have some of the best cuisine (which it is) served in such a lovely way (which it is)...I ate at Agashiye several times during my stay in Ahmedabad and loved it each time. Plus, you're given a road-map for Guajarati thali, explaining what each dish is and how the meal is composed. Delightful! Only wish I could export it to Chicago and co to he to dine there....

Firstly the restaurant seems quite unadvertised when you arrive in ahmedabad. I am guessing their claim to fame is the excellent word of mouth. The same way I was informed about it by a friend far away and remotely not connected to ahmedabad. Took a bit of searching and asking directions to get to this place. Moreover on arrival there were no prominent signs of the restaurant perched on a terrace. This restaurant is located on the terrace of a very very old Haveli which seems to have been restored only recently. Haveli and its history are a shell around this lovely restaurant. The mansion belongs to a famous Mangaldas family and there are ample pictures dating back to a century to relive the memories. After you reach the terrace, the subtle yet thematic decor is quite a welcome and the excitement builds as you pass through the first veranda, through a glass living room like structure, across the kitchen and then into an open terrace. A regular thali costs 500 Rs and a deluxe would cost 700 Rs. Not much if compared to large metros but tad bit higher compared to Ahmedabad standards. But still is worth exploring. The service is very good and they will only intrude when required. It was good to see them stationed far but still keep your plate under a watchful eye and appear as soon as you look up for assistance. Food quality is good. Less oliy. Good variety. Decor is nice and so they finish your meal with a sweet and a pan. Surprisingly this was one place which seemed a good hangout for expats since there were an equal mix in there on my visit. Overall, a must try for their service and experience even if you are not such a big fan for gujarati food.

Menu is fixed and thorough traditional Gujarati Vegetarian food. There is no dearth of Thali restaurants in Ahmedabad, why then would you cross over Sabarmati to old City for a thali ?

The difference is history, ambience and food quality. About the only place where early 20th century urban nostalgia is merged into dining experience in Ahmedabad.

A must visit for visitors from outside Gujarat, plan for a long evening and spend time exploring the place , not just the food and innumerable variety of pickle and mouth fresheners.

Do not forget to look across the road for a look at the famous Sidi Sayyed Mosque and its filgreed windows (Jali). Though the trees in between does not allow a good view.

The legacy of the place influences your overall experience. Food is good and service is adequate. The green Tea ice cream finishes the meal perfectly.
