This museum has a wonderful collection of painted scenes from the life of Krishna. The paintings are all done on hand-woven fabric, hence the name "Museum of Textiles". Unlike many museums in India, the items are well protected and displayed in a viewer-friendly manner. The guide is able to provide some nice background information to help inform your visit. As well, the collect is housed in a beautiful old mansion, so the site is very nice. Additionally, they have a lovely collection of south-Indian bronzes. This museum really runs a tight ship, all in the interest of preserving the pieces they have painstakingly collected. Call at least 3 days in advance to reserve one of the 10 daily slots.

Despite booking in July and arriving to find our name was not on the list (only a limited number are allowed in for the tours), we eventually got in (persistence pays in India). We took the morning tour, I did the afternoon one many years ago, and this was very interesting with lots of wonderful examples of Indian textiles all under one room with great if dramatic descriptions by our guide. I must say she was very enjoyable and provided lots of information about the collection and Indian textiles. Free and worth the time but book in advance and bring a copy of you email with you.

A stunning and outstanding collection of Indian textiles- very unique- It seems more popular with visitors from abroad- surprisingly I had never visited the place during the time I lived in India, but ended up doing all the 'touristy trips' when i visited Ahmedabad last winter. This is a private collection of the Sarabhai family, and it would be brilliant if the Government supported some of their efforts even partially. The guide was very well informed and the sitting area at the end of the tour with the sound of flowing water and the sight of peacocks is tranquil and heartwarming.I was a bit disappointed in the end, with the guide who specifially chose guests to write in her review book- it should be made open to all and in my opinion it is almost condescending to not offer a review book to someone and to offer it to someone else-why the bias? However, my mother who was with me suggested I should ask for the book if I really wanted to write one!
Overall, you should visit this place because there is no other collection like this one. Go for both tours if possible and make sure you book in advance - we only managed to get a slot in for the afternoon textile tour.

Calico museum is an excellently curated collection of historic textiles. You can only visit as part of a guided tour - these are free but with limited numbers. Set in an old house in lovely wooded grounds this is an outstanding display with a very imformative tour.
