This was a great little hotel. We had a lovely suite with a cool swing chair in the front room.

The TV was unfathomable, and the safe didn't work - but that's India!

There was some street noise and we could hear the call to prayer from the mosque across the road - that's India too. We loved the feeling this gave of being very definitely somewhere so different to home, but this may not be to everyone's liking.

The staff were really friendly and the food was excellent. The indoor pool was spectacular!

Note that they have a tip box at reception which removes the hassle of rummaging for change.

We booked this hotel as a little treat for ourselves during a trip to India. We expected a nice room but nothing prepared me for the gorgeous room that we got.
Room was huge with a 4 poster king size bed with nets around it. A giant teak swing was hung from the ceiling and there was a separate dressing room as well as a massive bathroom. The room also had a TV, DVD and stereo, wireless internet and a safe.
The hotel has a lovely pool complete with games that can be used to play while in the complex.
Hotel staff were extremely professional and helpful. When we expressed a desire for the cheaper option of catching a bus out of town, rather than hire our own private car, we were not looked down upon but rather staff went out of their way to help and accommodate us.
Food in the rooftop restaurant was superb and not expensive.
There was nothing a bout this hotel that I did not like.
Would I recommend it??? ABSOLUTELY you'd be mad not to go.

having read good reviews of this establishment we were very disappointed
We found the reception staff unenthusiastic & not very welcoming
We found the restaurant staff unhelpful & the food only average
Our room was comfortable but we found the rest of the building dull
We have travelled extensively in all parts of India on many holidays & certainly this hotel is one of the few that we feel we would not happily re-vist

We stayed 1 night at the House of MG but next time we would spend more time at this hotel which is from another era and together with the restaraunts is probably the best hotel we stayed at in India .

The Agassi restaurant is where I have haed the best Gujarati food in my life and the service is fantastic .

Just watch the world go by at this magical place .

Our visit to the House of MG was one of the highlights of our India visit. The hotel is a multifloor family mansion in the heart of a busy , heavily trafficked Ahmedabad neighborhood but its truly a refuge from the crush of the city - The exterior style is a rather fusty late victorian orange - it is an atypical heritage property - but has all the mod cons and very good modern furnishings in the extremely high-ceilinged and tiled rooms. Some might find the rooms hard surfaced and sparse, and the fact that all of the rooms may not have external windows is unusual but the design of the building is clearly a response to the hot, humid climate and the noisy, polluted urban conditions - the room temperature, lighting and ventilation was very good. There is a high standard of comfort, amenity and service.

The staff are very kind and helpful, and will assist you in planning a tour if the city, and even arrange an autorickshaw to take you around. Their recommended driver is quite knowledgeable and a pretty good tour guide also (be aware he will try to take you to some stores if you do not resist, and he is a major enthusiast of the modernist architecture in Ahmedabad - we recommend hiring by the day or half day, it works very well - we were able, with his help, to squeeze in both the old city and textile museum tours in a single morning.

The main glitch we experienced with house of MG was in booking our room online. Theoretically, you are able to book a particular room - however when we arrived we were taken to a different room and were told that the room we had booked was not available. I was mostly upset because I'd spent a lot of time looking and choosing - the room we were given turned out to be fine, but just dont get too invested in the selection process, it may not pay off.
The two restaurants in the hotel are both excellent - we very much enjoyed sampling the wide range of Gujarati snacks at the Green House (both outside and inside accomodations - do try the sharbats, cooling drinks, especially the bright green mint-coriander-lime version) and at the elegant Agashiye restaurant on the roof, which offers a multicourse thali meal. When you book at Agashiiye, make sure you specify clearly whether you want their standard or Royal meal. The food at Agashiye was exquisite and I think authentic and typical. That doesnt mean you will like every dish - my daughter did not like the sweetness of their kadhi (the thickened yogurt dish that is very typical) and neither of us appreciated the khichdi, a bland rice/dal dish over which a ladle of ghee was poured at the table, but many of the parade of dishes and breads were wonderful, finishing with an excellent paan. Not to be missed. We also had a thali meal at Vishala and the food was pretty much on a par.

House of MG has quite a nice store offering some of their decor items, books and a few nice clothing items. A major plus is that they have a side business of selling box lunches around town - if you are heading on, do buy one of these lunches - it turned out to contain some of the very best food of the trip!

Having stayed at so many place over the years, one sort of comes to expect a lot of things. Nothing ever seems to be original and refreshing. Off course then I happen to travel to Ahmedabad. and to House of MG.

Everything about House of MG is unique and wonderful. Rooms have a distinct heritage character and suits are really huge (I happened to just visit the restuarant but requested the hotel to show the rooms and they obliged).

The restaurants, the rooftop meal restaurant and the ground floor snack restaurant is full of unimaginable variety of original Gujarati dishes that its almost impossible to anywhere else. A Predominantly Non - Vegetarian like me also had a great time trying. Went there thrice in 4 days stay and always ended up something different.

The hotel also promotes some heritage walks which my hotel front desk did not even know about. Hotel I stayed was serving the typical "Punjabi" - North Indian fare and compared to that House of MG was another world in itself.

Another time and I will surely try a stay there. Surely will be another Experience !!!
