In tribute to Gandhi, Nehru said: “Wherever he trod became hallowed land, wherever he sat became temples.” True, indeed, that wherever Gandhi stopped has become a place of pilgrimage and wherever he roamed has become a sanctified place.
The Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, so named after the holy river Sabarmati, situated on the river’s banks is such an example. This site no longer functions as a working ashram but as a museum and an institution whose aim is to preserve and propagate the legacy of the Mahatma.
The Sabarmati Ashram is a source of inspiration for the present generation, and will serve as such for the generations to come. Indeed, Gandhi’s ideals will serve as a beacon light for all generations. The Ashram has stood witness to many important happenings, happenings which were instrumental in shaping the Karmavir Mohandas into the Mahatma and the Father of the Nation.
The Sangrahalaya remains open for visitors from 8.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. on all days including Sundays and Holidays.

It was an interesting and informative trip, and has retained much of its simplicity, which is good. This should not be turned into a disney style tourist trap. However, there were much of the grounds that were in need of cleaning, and we could not find adequate bathrooms. The ones provided were in very bad shape and dirty, even by Indian standards. Considering the importance of Ghandiji on India's landscape, I thought the place to be a bit sparse and lacking the attention it deserves.

Well maintained and bring backs the memory of the freedom struggle. The exhibition is comprehensive and traces the whole track record of Gandhi's life

Sabarmati Ashram is a must visit place. The peace which this place have can only give the strength for revolution.

I could touch and see the things which were used by the our freedom fighters. seeing so closely rooms and charkha of Mahatma Gandhi gave such a contented feeling which can not be explained in words.

only sad thing is the up keeping of this heritage. This is not being maintained very well. It could have been so good if this visit could teach me some facts of Bapu which I am unaware.

sitting at the bank of Sabarmati river for 5 minutes are the calmest 5 minutes of my life.

"Ghandis Ashram" is a well maintend place situated along the banks of the river. Quiet and peaceful, the buildings within the Ashram are in perfect condition. There is a nice museum and shop within the Ashram and if you want you might try some yarn spinning on his balcony right in front of his house.
