“Ancient beauty with and added dash of serenity”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2011

I lived in Ahmedabad for a long time and this is by no means my first visit to Modhera. I've been there several times over the years and I've really seen it shaped to the respect the ancient sun temple deserves. Over the years, the grounds have been landscaped and that's brought a variety of wildlife to the area...while we were there we saw deer and lots and lots of peacocks(it had just rained so the peacock population was really high). The structure itself is eroding as years go by, but its mostly well kept. There is also an ancient step well on the grounds, but be ware if you decide to walk down the steps- they're steep and the steps can be slippery. Part of the beauty of this trip is the drive there....lush farmland really adds another dimension to the trip. Also, explore the grounds while you're there...lots of beautiful flowering plants and trees- great spot for a picnic. The Sun Temple is also a venue to a dance festival in January- I've heard it is very good, although I haven
t had the chance to witness it first hand. Overall, its an architectural masterpiece tucked away from the hustle and bustle of daily life- good place for a little meditation.

“Must Visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2011

Situated at a distance of 102 kms from Ahmedabad on the bank of the river Pushpavati, the Modhera sun temple was constructed in the year 1026 AD. It was established by the King Bhimdev of the Solanki dynasty in the dedication of Lord Surya. It is one of the finest architectures of the eleventh century. One of the best features of the temple consists of the carved torana arches. Read further to know more about the Sun temple at Modhera in Gujarat…

From the point of view of structural designing, the sun temple at Modhera is truly the one of its kinds. The Modhera sun temple encompasses three main chambers, namely Surya Kund, Sabha Mandap and Guda Mandap. Surya Kund is basically a beautifully carved stepped tank that was named after Sun God. Sabha mandap is the hall, where people gather for discussions on religious topics. Guda Mandap is the sanctum sanctorum, also known as the main temple.
Presently lawn and garden is developed around the ruins. You can not get food near the temple. You will have to carry the same.
This temple is must visit if you are visiting Ahmedabad.

“An ancient sun temple. Great design, sculpture. Yet another hidden gem.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 14, 2010

The Sun Temple at Modhera is a great ancient temple to the Sun god. The kund outside the temple, the rang mandap and the sanctum sanctorum, together make a superb monument to spent a couple of hours at. The pillars and walls are decorated with excellent sculptures in sandstone. A must visit if you are anywhere near Ahmedabad.
