“Every rose has thorns.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 10, 2013

This was a bird sanctuary with impeccable birds but having poor facilities. You should get here by 6:30 sharp to spot more birds and to avoid the intolerable summer heat which exists in the months of March to July.

You will have to take a boat to travel trough the lake. The boats were small and uncomfortable. Also, many insects breed on the water and dragon flies can come near you.

The water is swampy but fresh and clear. It's depth does not exceed 1.5 meters throughout in summer. During March and May there are many birds in the sanctuary so it's best to visit during this time. We spotted the purple heron, white stork, black stork, hundreds of flamingos, seagulls and many more birds whose names were too difficult to remember.

You can get very close to the flamingoes ( around 20 meters away ). If you exceed that than they will fly away like they did with us. But don't worry that sight of seeing hundreds of flamingoes flying is truly worth watching with their impeccable colors. You can chase the flamingoes spot them again and again as the don't fly too far away. It took us 4 hours to do this.

“"swampy paradise"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

1. Hundreds of Flamingos taking flight when your boat gets closer to them.
2.Attention Seeking seagulls- ever hungry for the tidbits you throw out into the water.
3. The ever quiet Siberian Crane- so mysterious and so difficult to find.
4.The lovely Rajhans about which you hear such romantic stories of it not being able to survive without its mate.
5. Scores of other varieties of birds that would never find sitting on your parapet :)
6. A Swamp.

What else do you need?

Word of caution: find out from locals what the peak season months are, avoid weekends and you're good to go. Preferred time of visit would be wither october or feb-march. Less crowd.

Although surprisingly last year rains occurred late so we got to see loads of em even in the month of JULY. It all really depends on their migratory patterns and weather conditions. So do call up the reserve and enquire before you go.

DO NOT MISS IT IF YOU'RE in Ahmedabad.

“Excellent for bird watching”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2013

Visited this place again after 4 years, and no major changes. I see that tourism department hasnt done much over here, and I think it's a good thing for the birds.
Again, you have to reach here early(i reached at 5:55am) to make sure you're on one of the first few boats to depart, in case you wanna take a closer look at flamingos.
Again, you need to haggle boat rates with middlemen who'll follow you right from the entrance. Once that's done and put away with, it's a pretty good experience. Lots of birds to been seen. Had a pretty close look at flamingos and pelicans.
The island with watch tower still features on the must visit place, if you like to eat traditional food that nearby villagers do prepare and serve on that island. Menu has been upgraded to Rotlo+Maakhan+3 Sabjis (Bengan-bharta, Sev-Tamatar and lasaniya-potato)+Garlic chutney. Amazing.
Apart from that, if you like seagulls following you, make sure you pickup some light snacks(gaanthiya/mamra/etc) for them and they wont leave you alone on your way back to starting point.

“Filled with middlemen”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2013

Went to Nalsarovar with out planning ,as it was near to Lothal. There we found Toran has few tents also. This would be better option as ur chances of watching migratory birds increases manifold as they not disturbed by boats.
We reached in noon and found the board about boat fee was in Gujarati could not read. No sign board of the office or ticket counter added to this the middlemen were hounding. With no option we bargained brought down the price. Went for a ride in boat or taken for a ride?
Any way we saw few birds. Nice boating in vast lake with seagulls following us as our son fed them little snacks every now and then.

“It was a pleasant visit!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2012

This lake bird sanctuary is famous for different foreign birds which you can see in the winter. So best time to visit is Dec to Feb. We went there by car from Ahmedabad. It is better to reach early in the morning around 5:30 AM. So you can get the ticket and boat early to see the birds. Boatmen costs between 2000/- to 3000/- for 8 seat boat for around 5 hours. The lake is really beautiful. We could see many birds but unfortunately big birds were less. There are 4-5 points to see inside the lake by boat. Carry enough food as there is not much things available in the lake to eat. You can buy food from local people for birds, so that you can see them closely.
