After a 12 hour delay at gatwick, we arrived at the summerville.
we are well seasoned travellers and have stayed in many countries, in accomodation ranging from 1 to 5*. Never have i seen a room as dirty, shoddy and foul smelling as we did that night. The toilet was foul, there were bare wires hanging out of the walls, the towels and sheets looked dirty.the stair well leading to room was dirty and kept in a poor state of repair. The door to the room had a boot inprint and so it goes on.
We had booked with Jewel in the Crown, never to be repeated. After speaking to the rep, we were so called upgraded, to a larger but still dirty room for the night. In the light of day please be aware that there are locals living to the right of the hotel and a building site to the left, not mentioned in the brochure
After a farce with the rep the next morning, we went off and found our own accomodation, a wonderful B&B called Virginina's.
We are in the midst of a legal wrangle with Jewel in the Crown, who have offered so far £138, which they say is the amount they would of paid the Summerville, for two weeks, two rooms on a B&B basis. No wonder if this is the case, that the Jewel in the Crown accomodation block is so poorly maintained. Thomas Cook also go here, their block is painted blue and looked clean and tidy. We also saw that the the beach beyond the grounded tanker was untidy and unkept.
We learnt a hard lesson, stick with tour operators you know and trust.

we have seen much worse than this hotel in goa or anywhere else for that matter. you get what you pay for we got a cheap deal and had a great time there its a great base for a beach based holiday or for getting about its the opposite end to the beach road but a nice walk or a short tut tut ride to the shops and bars. the only problem we had realy was the bed was so close to the bathroom that everytime we went in there you cracked your shins we were there for 3wks so our shins took a pasting ha ha but apart from that if you can handle basic but clean with great staff ...... get booking.

We've just got back from Goa staying at the Summerville and I can honestly say that it is no where near as bad as the previous reports say. We've been to Goa nine times and found this hotel to be OK our room was in the newer block it was cleaned every day and the bed linen and towels were changed every other day. Of cause the fitments aren't up to european standards but the beds were comfy and the bathroom was fine. The breakfast was the usual Goan breakfast of toast (which wasn't bad) then for a small amount you could have lots of different thingseggs ceral etc( the porridge was lovely ) this is the same in most Goan hotels.
There was a building under construction nearby but again its not like a european building site and watching the workers added to the holiday experience .
Overall this hotel was very nice the staff were always friendly so don't be put off by the other reviews go experience it for yourself, we'd not hesitate to stay there again

As already stated by other reviews to say the standard of the rooms is shocking is an understatement. The room was dirty, poorly furnished and in need of basic repair. The bathroom had windows that were jammed open and a shower bodged together using a variety of electrical wiring which had been left dangling, taped under the shower. When this was pointed out the the reception staff they taped it to the ceiling. We did ask for an alternative room, however, they had none availalble. We knew we had not booked a four star hotel, yet the hotel did not even meet the basic standard requirements. In the brochure and on their web site the hotel is shown to be surrounded by undeveloped areas, however, this is now a buidling site with construction going on late into the evening and starting very early in the morning with a cement mixer in great need of oiling. This was our first visit to Goa and having seen the other hotels available we would not reccommend this hotel to anybody even if on a tight budget as there are much better ones to choose from.

I have been to Goa on several occasions and can quite honestly say that if this was the first hotel I stayed in, I would not return. We always get a taxi at the airport (750Rs) and we got to the summerville before the coach arrived. On arrival we we ere meeted by the reception staff who did not show much interest, he handed us a key and explained that he could not clean the oom properly as it has rained the night before?? When we got to the room, to say that we were shocked was an under estimation! There was mould climbing the walls, a hole in the wall where we can only assume used to house the air conditioning unit. Our window overlooked someones back garden which was stinking. When we opened the bathroom door we were greeted by what can only be described as a stench. I was heaving. The bed sheets and towels were both stained and unclean, I know you never get that Daz whiteness in goa but this was really stretching the work clean. As you would expect, we complained but got the usual response....... nothing to transfer to. So we went on the hunt for accomodation ourself. Be were helped by some local lads that we have known for several years and thankfully found a really nice guest house which cost us £125 for the entire holiday. The staff at the hotel did not seem surprised that we were going, I can only imagine that this was a regular occurance. We booked with Thomas cook and really did expect better. We know Goa very well and know that you cannot expect the ritz but this was totally unacceptable. So come on Thomas cook, goa is a wonderful place and in the past we have never had any reason to complain but on this occasion you have really let us down. Remove this appauling hotel from your brochure so nobody gets to see a hovel like this again.

I've just returned from Goa, staying at the Summerville (or Summervillers as the locals call it). I have to comment that I had a fabulous stay there. My room was always clean. All the staff at the time of my visit were fantastic, helpful and polite. It has a decent size pool which isnt child friendly (due to the depth) but this is pointed out in the brochure and it suited me. Summerville's location is 3 minutes walk (if that) from the beach itself and is located a minute from the main Candolim Road which is handy for just about everything and anything. Yes of course there are rats in India ... but then again - there are rats in the UK too - an ever-growing population! As someone said, its Third World. So put up, shut up or don't go. Goa is utterly delightful.
