We researched and booked this hotel over the net, and I must say that while the hotel may be doing brisk business - Daman being a 'wet' spot in a 'dry' Gujarat - the hotel needs a makeover of sorts.
There was a conference of about 150 plus delegates of a leading electronics company, who were noisy and brusque, with the hotel obliging them with loud music for their dinner. Obviously they were swallowing a lot of the beer and other booze which was paid for by their company and otherwise not available in dry Gujarat, so they were making merry. Good business for the hotel!! At the cost of its other guests.
The banquet hall booked for us (we were one fifth their size) was made not available due to this congregation! But the board displaying our booking was still around when we checked out next morning! But they made 'arrangements' for us about 500 mtrs down the road at an outdoor shack of another hotel! Of course they apologised profusely for the faux pas, but here in India, saying sorry is easy & meaningless.
My room overlooked the pool, which was inviting, and I accepted that in all humility. Nice refreshing and lovely evening breeze. Can't complaint there!
The room quality could have been better! A noisy Window AC became more efficient as its motors 'warmed up'. And that was a bit of a wait! The food in the outdoor restaurant is so-so, no patch with the taste and ambience of Goa! The beach was narrow and dirty, the sand nowhere near white. similar was the sea unfortunately. (Now thats not the hotel's fault really!). The staff seemed over worked and it showed on their faces. Fortunately it didn't take much time at check in and check out! At night, the room service refused to send me drinking water, and I was asked to fetch it myself from the cooler placed across the central atrium! It took some convincing on my part to make them see sense that the guest is always right!!
Being a resort, it's expected that there will be more activity for the family. But the standards here have been kept rather low, so the mindset is obviously of below par standards. The concentration in Daman is liquor, and it's a common sight to see drunken folks walking down the street at night. So many people come from Gujarat just to get their fill of booze on the weekends. As ill-luck would have it, we were there on a Sunday!
Would I return here? No! If I have to go to Daman again, I would look at better options.
