Mountains all around and great trails. Water source on trail which makes pools. Nice to cool off. Saw wild Javelinas. Very cool! Stayed 6/8/10 and bath-house was under construction. That could be why there was only 4 campers there that night. We didn't know and had water at out site so we were fine. Would stay back here in a heartbeat.

We stayed here for 2 nights in February 2010. It was very pleasant and quiet. It is about 13 miles from Alamagordo at the base of the mountians. We wanted a nice place to stay while we visited White Sands National Monument (which I highly recommend). The restrooms were always clean, although there was a sign telling us that they will be closing them down to remodel in the near future. They said they were having a problem with the heat and hot water, but we did not experience that. The campground lies at the base of Dog Canyon and there is a nice visitor's center and trail for hiking.

My husband and I spent a lovely weekend camping at this state park. There were so many birds and beautiful desert flowers! We spent an evening stargazing with the camp host. The bathrooms and showers were clean. The visitor's center is interesting. We did not go on the nature walk or the Oliver Lee homestead, we just ran out of time! We definitely plan to go back!

Dog Canyon, where bandits used to hide out, is a really amazing natural site. I've been there about a dozen times, and it still is interesting. Not an all day place, especially in the heat of summer, but if you enjoy hiking it's well worth it. Heck, it's worth it, just jumping in the little mountain cool stream.

If you are not a camper, you can park your car at the visitor center and take a short 30min hike thru beautiful dog canyon.
Or, you can hike up the mountain for a breathtaking view of the valley.
From Alamogordo it is about a 20 minute drive and from El Paso about 1 and1/2 hours.
