We spent the day here on a cool, still, sunny day in January. It was a perfect day. If the temp is too hot, then you'd may be miserable. If the wind has kicked up, you be getting sand in your eyes and mouth and be miserable.
A very dog friendly (and horse) attraction. We had a blast taking the short and fairly short hikes. At one point we had the illusion of walking of beautiful white snow, but it was really the soft sand. The hikes have a lot of informative signs. Very well laid out. Plenty of places to go sand sledding. Only $3.00 to get in. Areas to picnic, ranger led walks, sunset walk.

Pros: unique, great hikes, staff, events
Cons: no water after ranger station

Much to our delight, White Sands is amazing... we've gone on several occasions including the meteor shower and the balloon festival. We recommend this place to all our friends in the area because it's very under-rated. There are so many trails and downright amazing views... go at sunrise, go at sunset, the views change but do not cease to delight. The gypsum is cool to the feet, which makes it nice in the summer heat... and for those who love winter without the cold, look no further! You can sled down, in your shorts and t-shirt. Great place for dogs too, but remember to bring water.

I cannot say that it didn't worth the visit, but for sure, if you are in a hurry, you would better not to make de deviation we did in order to reach the desert!! Anyway, once you are there you will have a great experience.

Enjoyed taking others for their first visits. It is a unique spot, a great place to hike and take pictures. It's fun to slide down the dunes on a saucer, too. Wonderful weather! Someday I want to experience a full moon here.

Took three teenagers (16, 16 & 18) and they climbed, slid down the hill on discs, raced back up to top and made "ramps" at the end to get them "airborne" (only 6" -- great laugh for those watching).

We picked up snow discs in town at K-mart for $10 each. (Big 5 also has snow discs -- Walmart has nothing). If you forget, no worries they are $15 at the gift shop.

Take water with you into the park.... and drive and drive until you see others sledding. It needs to be pretty steep, otherwise you stop constantly.

Can't wait to go back!
