“Salad Bar: Living in the Past”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

Hot Millions Salad Bar is one of the oldest restaurants in the city. Started by Col AB Singh, it offers excellent food right in the heart of the city. Its buffet was a trend setter, with the assortment of food rather well planned. It has been the favourite of the city for years.
The trouble is that the restaurant has not changed over the years. Col AB Singh's family seems to have lost interest in the restaurant after his death. The interiors, as well as the food - nothing has changed for many years. The interiors represent a staid, dingy, appearance, which was all very good at one time, but now with all sorts of restaurants in town, it looks quite unfashionable. There have been feeble attempts to upgrade the menu, such as adding a dessert or two, but the food remains the same. The prices, which at one time seemed OK, now seem to be on the higher side, compared to Buffet Lounge which lets you eat all that you want for Rs 299. The Salad Bar price of Rd 400 or so seems expensive, considering no snacks are served.
The management of Salad Bar also seems to be living in the past. We had a coupon from snapdeal but the restaurant refused to accept it, they said they needed a printout. Which was strange, now that railways and buses accepting SMS bookings. Anyhow, one of us had to find a place where the thing could be printed: there was a video game parlour who was very kind to let us print out the voucher. But this was very inconvenient.
It is a pity that Salad Bar has been allowed to stagnate. It was an excellent restaurant and there used to be a waiting list on many days. Now only a few tables were occupied. But since the restaurant represents the history of Chandigarh, it would be great if someone could make the place brighter and bring in some variety of food. And if they are giving out coupons, they should not insist on printed them out. The management really needs to live in the present.

Reviewed May 22, 2013

Place is in the heart of city center.
Ambienece is good.
Salad preparation are really good with a wide variety.Strongly recommended.Value for money
However the buffet prepration is average. Though they have variety but taste wise nothing great to write about. Not worth the value spent..
Overall a good place to chill out with salad.

“Totally avoidable buffet...Order a-la-carte”
Reviewed December 16, 2012

Last night my wife and I was really hungry so we rushed to Salad Bar for a buffet. Of the five times I've had food her before, I've been mildly disappointed twice but last night I was appalled.

Just one saving grace is that I love their Chicken-Pineapple salad and it was great as usual (come to think of how complicated a dish that it: throw in some cooked chicken and diced pineapple in a lot of cream and VOILA!).

The main course:
Methi-Chicken: Disgusting: they'd diluted the curry with water and the chicken wasn't fully cooked.
Palak-paneer: absolutely tasteless.
Mushrooms: palatable.
Rajmaa: I think the cook accidentally dropped a whole big packet of salt inside. A BP-patient would have to be shifted the emergency after eating that.
Aaloo-capsicum, dal and manchurian were OK (but is that why we came to eat buffet? NO).
Salads were fine as usual but my point is that the buffet's not worth it if half the dishes are avoidable.

When I complained, they offered kadai-chicken and kadai-paneer to us (of course without extra charge) but after already eating a bit and waiting for a long time for the new dish, my appetite was dead. The new dishes were alright though.

The lady manager was polite and prompt (so prompt that she didn't let me finish). It was as if she wasn't in the least surprised that someone had complained about the buffet's main-course food. The waiters were alright too but they too was in a hush-em-up mode.

I couldn't help but overhear another person complaining as well. However the rest of the crowd didn't mind it!! (huh!!) Maybe they'd hog on what was fine and avoid the rest of it but then what's the point of ordering a buffet?

So as of Dec 2012, one non-veg and one veg buffet cost us Rs. 918/- (aha! yeah incl. Rs. 118/- service charge and service tax which was abbr. as SC/ST and although I'm not one (aha! mentioning it explicitly so that some out there don't start avoiding my reviews! Incredible India!!) but it confused me at first whether they were expressing bigotry that way)

The cashier was a queer fellow. He had a rude demeanor. It was like somebody whacked his behind and forced him to sit there.

Final verdict: Buffet avoidable A-la-carte is ok.
