“The olden glory”
Review of Nalanda

Nalanda
Reviewed August 16, 2013

Barely about 70 KM from Patna lies the ruin of ancient seat of learning - the University of Nalanda. You must make time to visit it, immerse yourself in the ancient glory of teaching.

Take a guide and he will be more interested in telling you where was the shooting of some movie was done. That was a disappointment for me. But once you move around a little, you can see the hostels, the main stupa, the kitchen and the classrooms. The architecture was such that it controlled the temperature in summer as well as in winter. The thickness of walls, which is over 4 feet draws your attention all the time.

Photography on tripod is not allowed for reasons unknown. However, you can shoot with camera to your heart's content.

The place is very well maintained as it is the home constituency of the state chief minister, who is a scholar himself.

A place that you must visit if you are in Patna. Set aside one full day to visit the marvel of learning of ancient years.

The ruins of the university are awe inspiring but the maintenance is bad.The ASI is not doing anything tangible to preserve the ruins. One monument has now been barred for visitors after it was allowed to be climbed without any proper care. I am speaking of the stupa which was shown in the film Johnny Mera Naam. It is rumoured that if excavations are done in the nearby villages, more such ruins will be visible.A guide would be necessary to understand the various buildings but he should be taken from the office not the fleecers who stand outside. It is worth visiting at least once to see the university which was once an epitome of learning. However, the road to the monument from the main road quality is not good with little maintenance.

Take a guide. Withhout a guide you will not understand anything amidst bricks. There are large number rooms with only one opening. One wonders, how they managed the ventilation. Evening would be the time to visit. If you involve deeply, you might start seeing scholars sitting in amphitheatre listening to scholarly lectures
