The hotel is one of the finest hotels in Andaman and Nicobar islands with excellent facilities. It is worth staying in this hotel when on a trip to Andaman. The hotel offers one of the finest range of food combinations and helps family to spend quality time

Except the name, tariff and the location, nothing are online with the FORTUNE standards.
The rooms are dressed in a local street side hotel style, the bath rooms are quite small and nothing to compare with the FORTUNE standards,we feel we have wasted money by staying here instead we may have stayed in some other roadside hotel. But the location of the resort is superb for which FORTUNE group can improve much much

Large, clean airy rooms with a pretty balcony facing the sea, done up in minimalist style. The bathrooms are very tiny and dull as compared to the room itself.

The bathroom could have been cleaner; though when this was brought to the notice of the staff they were prompt in getting it cleaned.

The food is not upto the mark in terms of variety and taste.

The resort has a tiny salt water swimming pool and fitness centre.

For the price and brand (Welcome group of hotels) though, you'd expect a much better room and service. Nothing extraordinary about the resort. It is also located away from the places of interest; so it's not convenient in that sense either.

Definitely not value for money.

The trouble started at check in time. I had a confirmed reservation for a room with a sea view, but the front desk apparently knew nothing about it. I was not carrying a printed copy of my reservation, so it took a few phone calls and a wait of over 15 minutes before they finally were able to retrieve my booking. Annoying! I was then given a room with an apology of a sea view - not the 'full sea facing view' that was promised to me over the phone at the time of booking. The unhelpful reception staff claimed there were no other sea view rooms available, although it turned out later when I spoke to the supervisor the next day that there was another vacant room. The room I got was rather tired & worn out, desperately needed a bit of perking up. Ditto for the attached washroom and the balcony with the said 'sea view'. The so called swimming pool (an oversized tub would be a more honest description) had suspiciously greenish looking water, not quite the enchanting pool edge they have pictured on their website.

Mercifully, I was staying with the 'Fortune' for only two nights.

So why have I given them an OK rating & not Terrible? Because the friendliness of the restaurant staff made up for a lot. As also did the stunning view of the bay area of Port Blair from the terrace restaurant. The food was of passable quality.

The hotel also arranges private day trips through the Jarawa tribal reserve. I baulked at the stiff tariff (Rs9,000 per car for the day), but in retrospect, I am glad I took it up for what turned out to be a once in a life time opportunity to observe the Jarawa tribals in their own habitat. Awesome!

I traveled with my family to the Andamans in July 2009 (which is an off season period) for a 3 night trip. We were doubtful about the kind of hotel that we would get based on some of the bad reviews for this hotel. However, we were pleasantly surprised. Let me first pen the pros for this hotel (the cons aren't that many): (1) The staff is extremely courteous. We had arranged a taxi to pick us from the airport and the hotel staff was there punctually with a a placard (they charge about Rs 450 for the ac car). (2) check in was a breeze (though they do ask for a pre-booking amount which is a pain as the website never works- and I had to send Rs 500 through an electronic transfer. That's just 10% of a days rent !!). (3) The rooms are spacious (wooden flooring, mini fridge and all) - but make sure you get a room with a sea view. I insisted on one and got a great room with a sea -facing balcony. They have only a few sea facing rooms so you would have to pay extra (about Rs 500 per pay per room) but its worth it. (4) The restaurant is good with great Indian meals. The menu has Chinese (the indianised kind) and continental and a few Italian dishes. My package had a complimentary breakfast. As there weren't very many guests at that time, the breakfast was converted from a buffet to a la carte. For dinner we ordered in the room and all dishes were tastefully done. (5) I also must compliment the tour arrangements that were provided by the hotel. I had the option of booking with anyone. On arrived I met their tour service advisor and she was very helpful. She arranged a trip which included - day 1 to Mt Harriet (isolated with a nice view form the top, you can trek from the top), day 2 to Havelock island by ferry (returning on the same day - evening). This was the best part of the trip and day three to the Marine park (for snorkling and corals). Though a bit expensive but very well managed. They also pack food for the trip (including the complimentary breakfast if you start very early) along with beach towels, umbrellas and water.

Now for the cons: (1) The bathroom is small (though well stocked) and not what you would expect for that price, (2) they do not have an in room safe (3) The pool is small.

Some tips for the Andamans: The best beach to go to are the beaches on Havelock Island (Radhanagar beach, beach no 5 etc). You can only get there by ferry and the fast ferry trip lasts for about 1.5 hours one way. There is a slow ferry which stops on other islands along the way so you may want to avoid that one. All these ferries are Govt owned and are well maintained. They start from the harbor. The one I picked started at 6 am which was fine as the Harbor is pretty close to the hotel. The ferry y is air conditioned but you will all end up moving to the upper deck within minutes of departure. The view of mist covered islands passing by and the endless waters on the other side was fabulous. The weather was great with a mild drizzle though I suspect that in deep summer the upper deck would be sweltering.

The beaches on havelock are all white sand beaches and very closely resemble the Caribbean beaches. There aren't good roadside food shops near the beaches so its advisable to take packed food and water. You can also think of staying overnight at havelock (I missed doing that) at some of the hotels that are there on havelock.

The marine park is maintained by the govt and you need to pay a ticket for that. They take you on a large wooden boat (about 10-15 passengers) to a small island inside the park. Then they transfer you to what' they call as a glass boad (its actuallu a wooden boat with a small fibre glass viewing ports on the bottom. This boat takes you around (2-3 minutes) and the helmsman tells you that you can see the corals below. There really isn't much you will see. But the fun starts then. The "glass" boat drops you on the island and you can start swimming in the shallow beach. The island is so isolated that you would start feeling like Robinson Crusoe very soon. I liked the place. The boatmen then convert to coral guides and bring a couple of snorkling gears. You can use the snorkeling gear to see some of the corals along the beach (the guide will swim with you). This is when you can really see some beautiful corals and fishes. On the whole worth it.

Food in Port Blair isn't so great - so I advise you use the Hotel restaurant itself. They have a good chef.
