We visited the gardens recently as my husband is very interested in trees and shrubs. Having read so much about the gardens in the local tourist brochures I was surprised by how poor the infrastructure was. Even at the entrance to the park where they charged L.308 (why the 8?) for the two of us, the lady had no change and we had to do a deal with our taxi driver so he could pay for us. A new visitor centre is being built, however, so maybe things will improve. We then paid another L.100 for a guide. Our guide was excellent and very knowledgeable but spoke only Spanish and a very little English. The hour-long tour was very interesting and our guide let us taste many of the exotic fruits we saw growing there. Once the tour was over though, it was difficult to find out what else we could do there as there were no maps you could take with you, just one large fixed map of the area. We did not feel confident of navigating our way in such a big area without a map to guide us. Also as the park was very quiet that day we had a long wait for a taxi to take us back to Tela again. With hindsight we should have arranged for our taxi to return for us at an arranged time.
