We visited the gardens recently as my husband is very interested in trees and shrubs. Having read so much about the gardens in the local tourist brochures I was surprised by how poor the infrastructure was. Even at the entrance to the park where they charged L.308 (why the 8?) for the two of us, the lady had no change and we had to do a deal with our taxi driver so he could pay for us. A new visitor centre is being built, however, so maybe things will improve. We then paid another L.100 for a guide. Our guide was excellent and very knowledgeable but spoke only Spanish and a very little English. The hour-long tour was very interesting and our guide let us taste many of the exotic fruits we saw growing there. Once the tour was over though, it was difficult to find out what else we could do there as there were no maps you could take with you, just one large fixed map of the area. We did not feel confident of navigating our way in such a big area without a map to guide us. Also as the park was very quiet that day we had a long wait for a taxi to take us back to Tela again. With hindsight we should have arranged for our taxi to return for us at an arranged time.

We went in Jan and I guess it wasn't the season for many of the plants so we really didn't get to see them all in bloom. We had a very knowledgable guide however and he did make the tour very interesting. It is worth the trip.

The day we visited the gardens no guides were available and without one or a map it was difficult to appreciate it. There are guards who patrol the gardens who were very helpful. We enjoyed swimming in the river; however, on the way there a worker suggested a shortcut to get there. Later we were told it was not a good idea due to the snakes. . . another traveller remarked that she went there with her mother and they nicknamed it the 'ghost gardens" since no one was there. It's not a place with flowers or well-marked trails.

We took the guided tour and then went by ourselves to the swimming holes. Not only was too cold for me, I saw a red serpent thing in the water crossing to the other side! We met a Chilean couple that had a car and hook up with them to go to some of the near by beach towns. The place is very large. We like that the guard followed us but it also made us wander if it was dangerous. Woth visiting if in the area

One of the best places in Central America to go birding, beautiful with many birds.
