“A BLOCK”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

Well we were allocated A1 This time round found it to be fine, as others have pointed out in need of refurbishment but still suited us fine. we had hot water a good shower ,rooms were clean beds were comfortable .did feel that the noise from the strip was not as bad as our last time, but this time the louver windows actually closed,so this could have helped .New curtains are now in place which are very dark. A short cut has been made down to the pool and breakfast room.Breakfast basic . Staff as always polite and happy .have booked again for 2015. A lot of people were paying extra to move into the bungalows ,the rooms in the blocks are the same on the ground floors as the bungalows, but with the advantage of hot water most of the time. We think that some class the blocks as the council estate .

Room Tip: Block B upstairs has a sea view in some rooms ,and have wooden front door and a back door which coul...

Just returned from this hotel for the second time. This hotel is basic but good value for money. There are 2 block of ground and first floor flats (A&B) then a scattering of bungalows throughout the grounds. The blocks are in need of an upgrade bot overall serve the purpose. As the blocks have front and rear windows they are cooler as there is no air conditioning in them (fans can be hired at £10 per week. There are also no fridges but again can be hired at £15 per week. The pool area is clean however you need to be down at 7am to get a bed if you want an umbrella. The hotel beach is smaller this year as the water has eroded some of it (same all the way along the cost). There is another sandy bit where there are some beds. The hotel does not provide beach towels. Breakfast is basic, cheese, bread, jam, ham, melon, cereal, coffee and fruit juice. Beers at the hotel are cold however they cost 50 dl where outside you can buy for anything between 25-40. Staff are friendly, gardens are well kept and the entertainment (the monkeys) are there is the morning and evening (mostly around the blocks).
The hotel is situated in the main two streets. If you come out of the hotel and turn right there is a good exchange rate also if you turn left the first one you come to gives a good rate. GTS on the right is good for breakfast, lovely complete breakfast sandwich on a banquette, burgers are home made as well as the chips. The chef is excellent and provides meals all day (a must try). We tried lost of restaurants and did not have a bad meal (Jasmins was just okay). Dabroe's is excellent and good staff. We went to Scala on out last night and it is obvious why this is Gambia's number 1 restaurant, everything was excellent and steak was prefect. Our highlight of the holiday was Oscars on the Beach. If you walk to the hotel beach turn right and walk along about approx. 2 miles(best way to get a tan) staff are very good, ice cold beers and good food a place to chill out all day. Poka Loca was also on the beach before Oscars and again nice but bit more active with music and a live trio daily around 4pm.
Will be booking for next year and will return to this hotel as I cannot justify paying approx. £500 more per couple for the seniagambia hotel.
Kololi has improved this year. The military now provide security which has cut back drastically how many bumpsters are around (some people were intimidated by the constant pestering by them). A few places now have wifi where staff provide a password for you to use.

Room Tip: In my opinion block B is better as it appears the power of the shower varies some of the bungalows h...

We arrived aprrox 9 30pm during a power cut so forms at reception filled in by tourch light. To our delight we were allocated room 114 bungalow opposite swimming pool.We were very pleased with this as we e-mailed hotel prior to our trip and requested room opposite swimming pool due to wifes sight problems.Room was clean and spacious towels and bedding were very worn and hot water was often non exsistant but we realise we are in TG.We never had problem getting sunbed and we never had to give a backhander but if you wanted a parasol it might have been a different story but as we are sun worshipers it wasnt a problem.Pool and gardens very clean hotel prices also reasonable eg julbrew 55d.As already mentioned breakfast was poor but we already new this before we arrived but GTS across the road was there for anything more substancial.Beach in front of hotel virtually non existant but 10 minute walk to the right was our favourite beech bar poco loco.Very clean and great atmosphere. To sum up the HBC is a basic clean hotel in a great location and that is why we would return. Our favourite restraunt was scala closley followed by darboes and paradiso best bar for drink was GTS.

This is the second time we have stayed in the hotel and it will be the last. The rules of the hotel are pathetic and getting worse. No personal food or drink allowed, although they are quite happy to hire you a fridge, whatever for I don't know as you are not allowed to bring 'personal food or drink into the hotel' !. The breakfast is appalling...dry bread, tiny squares of cheese and some kind of meat..(ham I think), little cups and glasses, neither of which are allowed to be taken from the restaurant. We purchased our own mug and went over each morning for hot water. I expect that a new rule will be brought in, refusal to fill personal mugs with water, as judging from the staffs face, filling a mug of hot water was far to much trouble. There was toast offered but controlled by the staff as it was a household toaster however, when the sliced bread was finished (about 8am), there was no more toast on offer...needless to say on my holiday I refuse to get out of bed at 7.45am to get a slice of toast, or reserve my sunbed. The pool staff are more than happy to reserve you a sunbed in a good spot for a' backhander', one guy we spoke to gives the pool guy 1000 Dalasi at the start of his holiday to reserve his bed for two weeks !!! My friend was getting married whilst there and we asked that she be allowed to stay/get ready in our room so her groom would not see her until she arrived at the registry office, even though the Thomas cook rep tried to help and even quoted 800 dalasi to us, this was refused point blank, at best she would of arrived 7am, got ready and been out the hotel for 8am same day even this was not allowed...another rule, however, one Gambian guy was there with his 2nd wife and his children were allowed in the hotel all day...including using the pool, waiter service (to and from their room) and an afternoon nap for one of the boys. Also to rub salt into our wound was that for another 'backhander', some 'gentlemen' were sitting to breakfast with young Gambian girls that had obviously spent the night together. Some of the staff are very nice, but do 'loitter' around for their tips. There are only 8 sunbeds on the beach and the rest of the beds, apart from the reserved ones around the pool, are stuck behind a 'chicken wire' fence and you could quite happily lay on these 'dead', as not one member of bar staff comes anywhere near you to see if you would like a drink or anything, these staff sit 'twiddling one another's hair all day !!! Mike from GTS saved the wedding day..opening up early, bacon sarnies & champagne made the start of our day. Mike and his staff are brilliant good food, brill staff and a good even service..if anyones going he would like a Bacon Joint !!! We will be going back to Gambia as Kololi is a great resort to stay in. Swiss Tavern on the beach is a great place to sunbathe...with the staff tapping you on the shoulder to 'roll over' if they can see you turning pink ...... but will NEVER stay at Holiday Beach again !

Been to the area a few times but first visit to this hotel. Great location, right on the beach and only 250m from the bars and restaurants, far enough away that you don't get any noise if you decide not to party. Stayed in a superior room near reception. Good room, spacious, lovely comfortable bed and very clean. Maid came in everyday and towels changed daily. Nice medium sized swimming pool with an adjacent bar. Sometimes short on sunbeds (people did tend to reserve them and then disappear for most of the day!) but there are more sunbeds in the grounds near the beach along with another drinks/snack bar which is also good for an early tipple watching the sun go down. All the staff very friendly and helpful, especially on the Reception. Only downside was the 'continental' breakfast which could do with improving. If anyone wants to know, they don't provide pool towels so bring your own and all sockets are standard UK 3-pin so if you have 2-pin mosquito plugs don't forget an adaptor. Favourite places this time Scala & the Wild Monkey Bar.

Just got back from a wonderful holiday in The Gambia, first time in this hotel but not in The Gambia, very pleasantly surprised, rooms clean and spacious, pool area very pretty and tranquil but have to be up at a ridiculous time to reserve sunbeds unless you're prepared to pay the pool boys a back hander to do it for you!
We were lucky we initially thought to be allocated a bungalow room rather than 'the block' but be warned the verandas are all open plan and we were unfortunate to have very noisy neighbours who sat outside in the early hours drinking, shouting and carrying on,and when questioned we got a mouthful of abuse. However the management did deal with it but it did tinge our holiday slightly.
Lovely restaurants around the strip, our favourites Scala,Dabores and Jewel of India.GTS is excellent for breakfast and their porridge is delicious!
Solomans beach bar is another favourite and a must have is freshly caught butter fish in foil>
We would definately return to The Holiday Beach Club

We have stayed here many times and really love it-- the pool lads David & La are great and the rest of the staff are very nice. It is only a basic hotel but always very clean . Breakfast is continental but you can pay for a cooked 1if you prefer. Each time we go back improvements have been made -all for the better--it's in the best area of Gambia -Kololi-- we wouldn't stay anywhere else. Love the monkeys regular visits but be wary of the-- they're fun to watch . Go and enjoy xx

Room Tip: We like the bungalows around the pool
