“Comfortable Choice in Abiquiu”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2009

We recently spent 1 night at the Abiquiu Inn with our family. We had 2 casitas in the back of the property. Let me begin by stating that we stayed at the nearby Ghost Ranch a few years ago and vowed never to go back there. While the setting at GR is absolutely spectacular, the accommodations and, especially, food (!) were completely unacceptable. The Abiquiu Inn fit the bill in terms of the comfort and decor of the rooms (the casitas have kitchenettes with small fridge, microwave, sink, dishes and dining table), and the Cafe Abiquiu offers very good meals. The setting, however, was a disappointment. You are on a small and not very scenic patch of land just off the busy Route 84, and the traffic noise is surprisingly LOUD almost all night long. It's not the sort of place where you really would want to hang out and relax. In the final analysis, we thought the rates were high at the Abiquiu Inn, in terms of what you get in return.

The Abiquiu Inn casita was very comfortable and relaxing. The kitchenette and dining area allowed us to have breakfast supplies and cold beverages on hand. The restaurant served very good food, and the service was friendly and professional. Best of all was the art on the gallery walls - it makes you want to linger over the meals! The Georgia O'Keeffe studio tours depart from the adjacent building, and the inn serves as the town's information center.

After the touristy hubbub of Santa Fe, this was a peaceful hideaway. Quiet, comfortable bed, charming room, delightful staff. Not fancy, not upscale, just simple, a little rustic, and high quality in every respect.

There are few places to stay when visiting this part of New Mexico. Luckily, this delightful place is an oasis--the rooms are lovely, comfortable and have a decided New Mexico look. We asked for a quiet room in the rear and got #5, which was very quiet and the hotel gave a discount for using the Entertainment book. My only complaints about the room were that it was dark and needed another light in the room--the only lights were the 2 by the bed and although there was a desk and chair, the room could have used an easy chair. There is no pool or hot tub on the property. We had an excellent breakfast at the cafe in the inn--pinon pancakes and an omlet where you could add anything you wanted to the omlet..

I had driven by this hotel probably 50 times when I was in New Mexico as a teacher. Always thought, "I'd really like to stay there. It looks like a great place." I finally did stay there on a recent vacation and was not disappointed. If you like the Southwest and are in N.W. New Mexico, this is the place to stay, at least one night. Don't miss it. Clean, comfortable, roomy, charming rooms. Friendly staff and helpful. Great restaurant and gift shop is excellent. Great location. Don't drive by, stay there. It's not inexpensive, but worth the price.

Our room was very comfortable and well-appointed. The fireplace was an enjoyable touch (though the remote did not work on the second night). Bathroom was clean and spacious.
The restaurant is good, with a limited menu, but it's the only choice available other than Bode's General Store about a half mile down the road.
We were here for a very relaxing two nights. I was afraid that we'd run out of things to do but the tour of the O'Keeffe house was interesting (book in advance) and the National Park Ghost Ranch site was well worth a long visit (not the Ghost Ranch itself which is now a private retreat center which you can visit but is not as interesting). The scenery driving northwest on 84 is increasing spectacular and worth a drive at least as far as the Amphitheater.

The Abiquiu Inn was really lovely, but the curtains were so shear that we hung an afghan over the window so we could have some privacy.

Other than that, our room was very nice, complete with a fireplace. One of our doors opened into a common, beautifully-landscaped courtyard.

We ate at the onsite restaurant for both dinner and breakfast the next morning. Both were very good, but service was quite slow.
