Owner description: Beautiful white sandstone cliffs give breathtaking views.

We arrived at about 5pm on a crystal-clear afternoon and were immediately transfixed by the serene beauty of Plaza Blanca. There were no other visitors so we walked in silence among the towering white cliffs alternately looking up at the amazing formations and down at the colorful variety of rocks and stones. I don't think we could have found Plaza Blanca on our own - the turnoff isn't well marked, although the area is visible from the highway - so were grateful that our friend who'd been there before served as navigator. Definitely worth a day trip. Bring your camera, water, sunscreen and sense of wonder.

You don't have to be a Georgia O'Keeffe aficionado to enjoy "her" White Place, but it doesn't hurt!

This marvelous strip of limestone caverns is located off County Road 155 in Abiquiu, about 15 miles south of Ghost Ranch.. It's on private property owned by Dar Al Islam, but open for walking, hiking and photography. (Please respect the land!)

Ms. O'Keeffe spent many hours painting at the Plaza Blanca and you'll want to budget at least an hour just to walk around -- a lot more if you plan to paint or take photos.

The roads to Plaza Blanca (County Road 155, which intersects US 84, the private road to Dar Al Islam Mosque, and Plaza Blanca Road, which forks right off the private road) are mostly gravel and dirt, so be prepared for a rough ride.

Mid-afternoon is ideal for most photography.

A great place to go and spend a good couple of hours hiking. There are amazing rock formations, a mountainous backdrop, and some great places to go and explore. Plaza Blanca or (The White Place), has had many major movies filmed there like Cowboys and Aliens, and the First Star Wars Movie. Not to mention the new Johnie Depp Movie which is really good!

My husband and I thought this was one of our fav hikes during our recent visit to New Mexico. I love that there was no real "trail" (at least that we could fina anyway) and we could wonder up and around this beautiful area. We only encountered one other couple during our 2 hour visit. It was so quiet and beautiful. The hike can be strenuous or like, depending on where you choose to walk. would love to go back to take photos during sunrise/set time.

Just beautiful beautiful place, very spiritual feeling. You park at the Mosque and walk down and you can hike around. They filmed parts of Cowboys and Aliens here and the Lone Ranger. Apparently Shirley MacLaine hikes thru here with her dogs, her ranch is close by. Can't say enough about the beauty of this place....but not well marked to find it. Thanks to the folks who own the place where we were staying, we were able to find it easily enough. Not far from Abiquiu Inn.
