We didn't take highway 84 to 155 but approached from other direction so that is probably why we didn't find the mosque and entrance. So we exited 84 and started back in and took first left thru unmarked road and drove back, I was a bit apprehensive since I wasn't sure this was really a road but my husband drove on. Finally we parked and got out-WOW it was incredible. We were the only people around and the cliffs were so very different, the white color on the blue sky and their appearance of dripping. We really enjoyed this very unusual setting. So while we were not at the actual entrance we were there.

“Spectacular Rock Formations”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

Every turn on the less than perfect road provides magnificent views of the hoodoos in this ruggedly mountainous area. We had a 2 wheel drive Jeep that I didn't dare take to the bottom of the canyon. With 4 wheel drive I'd have been hiking amongst the majestic hoodoos. Just driving along the road and looking about is still a wonderful experience.

“The White Place”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

Plaza Blanca, or the White Place, is located just 3.6 miles east of Abiquiu, NM. This is where Georgia O'keefe painted a number of her most well known paintings. It is so named because the sandstone cliffs appear almost white in the full afternoon sun. A very moderate hike of approximately 1.2 miles and well worth it. The place definately has a spiritual quality about it and you can instantly see why O'Keeffe was attracted to it. Would love to have had more time to explore here.

“Gorgeous, free”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

After the O'Keefe home tour the guide told us they had directions to La Plaza Blanca. It was just a few minutes' drive away, and was a highlight of our visit to the area. I'm amazed at the generosity of Dar Al Islam, the property owners, who allow visitors to visit and hike in the area.

We found the small parking lot at the end of a dirt road and saw a small sign at the edge. We'd have probably stood at that overlook, snapped a few pictures and left except that a photographer carrying a tripod told us that we could walk through area by following trails that start at a nearby metal gate. I saw the gate but didn't notice the stile that allows people to walk through it while keeping vehicles out.

We were there near sunset, and in the quiet golden light amidst the amazing eroded shapes that rise from the ground I felt like we were wandering through a natural cathedral. Gorgeous, don't miss it! The O'Keefe connection makes this extra-special, but it's a wonderful place without that.

This place is truly a hidden gem. It is off the beaten path, so it's tricky to find. Ask someone where Dar al Islam is and they can point you in the right direction. We parked there and walked for hours. It was a wonderful way to spend the morning. Don't forget the sunscreen!
