“A bit off the beaten track, but well worth the effort of getting there”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2012

An early tip - if you're driving yourself here it might be wise to try and get a 4WD - the resort is just off the main coast road about half way between Nadi and Suva, and the road is not the best in several places - and the last part of the journey to the resort itself is on a dirt track. If you can do the drive in daylight as well, all the better, as there is some spectacular scenery on the journey. Allow three hours to get here from Nadi. We arrived at about 9pm, and were immediately made very welcome by the extremely friendly staff. Our studio vale was very well appointed, with good facilities for a self-catering stay - kitchen with triple burner gas stove, microwave, full size fridge-freezer and washing machine (nice bonus). The main bed was very comfortable, and the extra two beds were made up on the large L-shaped sofa in the living area of the room. Since we arrived in the dark, we didn't get the chance to see the view until morning, but we had an excellent surprise. The studio vales are all arranged around the crown of a small hill, and are nicely perched above the beach, giving excellent views around the peninsula on which the resort is located. The gardens surrounding the resort are very well-landscaped and maintained. As well as the vales, the resort has large dormitory facilities, and is able to cope with large touring groups.
The food, while not cordon bleu, was well cooked, plentiful and good value for money, with a fixed menu, and a daily soup, pasta, fish and dessert, and the kitchen open from 6.30 am until 8.30pm.
The main reason for choosing Volivoli for us was the diving. Excellent reefs all around with loads of coral and fish. My wife and 10-year-old both did their Open Water qualifications, and loved it. All the dive crew were extremely friendly and safety conscious, particularly with younger divers.
All in all an excellent week, which we wished could have been longer, but we will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: The studio vales all have elevated views - some out to sea, and some back over the bay towards Rakir...

Bula Vinaka,

Thank you very much for your kind review and very helpful travel tips. I would like to second the fact that if you are to hire a car in Fiji even if not coming to Volivoli that you insist on having four wheel drive vehicle as the roads in most parts are not that flash due to extensive flooding early this year.

It really does give our Resort and Dive crew pleasure when I forward comments like yours on to them which I will do this afternoon! They all work very hard and Volivoli would not be what it is without them.

We look forward to welcoming you all back again and look forward to helping your wife and son further their diving experience throughout the future as we hope to see you back soon.

Kind regards

Nick Darling

We came for 4 nights and stayed in the dorms which was terrific for us. The hosts and staff welcomed us and made our stayed absolutely wonderful. A special thanks to Solo who took us on our own private snorkel boat tour twice to see the soft corals, white-tip reef sharks, regal and semi-circular angelfish, banded seasnake, etc., etc.. My wife and I are avid snorkellers from the Big Island of Hawaii and the Bligh waters were more than we expected. We also enjoyed meeting the Fijian woman that would come from the nearby village selling artwork. At night we loved hearing the flying foxes - fruit bats chattering while gorging themselves on the green mangoes. Every morning the poor maintenance guy would have to clean all the remenents of their feasting. We hold up our bottle of Vonu beer and offer a big, "Cheers!" Thank you everyone at Volivoli. We will be back.

Bula Vinaka,

Thank you for your kind review of Volivoli. The snorkeling and Diving is very good in our surrounding waters. Those fruit bats certainly to make a lot of mess... And yes the poor maintenance man has to clean them up every morning but not all goes to waste as the staff make mango chutney from the green mangoes that are knocked off the trees by the bats.

I hope that you have a wonderful time during the rest of your holiday in Fiji.

Kind regards

Sorry it's taken me this long to review Volivoli but my family and I absolutely LOVED this resort. The facilities are clean, spacious, and the views spectacular. The staff knows you and your family by name as soon as you arrive. Great place to fly kites, hang out with kids, and play on the beach. We tried to get reservations for this weekend but not surprisingly they were booked.

Great job Nick in running this place. Loved Veenie and Jenny who took great care of us while we were there and so many others that names escape me at the moment. We will definitely be back but will need to book our accommodations earlier.

Wife and I stayed there 16-18th, 2012. Return visit. We were "Open Water" qualified by Ra Divers in Oct 2009. Stayed in Villa (Bure) overlooking ocean. Great rooms, kitchenette. ac, queen beds. Service and staff helpful, friendly and professional. Resort enlarging with bigger office/lodge, more villas etc. Computers available for fee. TV in bar/restaurant area. Family friendly and dorms available for students/budget limited folks. The Darlng Family from New Zealand run a great resort. Diving is exceptional.

Room Tip: All are excellent

It was our pleasure to host you once again and thank you for your kind review.

We have certainly expanded since you were here last and I am happy you like to developments.

We do have a couple of projects still in the pipeline which will enhance the resort further. One is due for completion before Christmas which is our new reception and boutique in the car park. This will make check in a real pleasure and also offer our valued guests somewhere to purchase little gifts for the family back home or simply treat themselves.

The other expansion being our spa which we do not have definite completion time on yet.

Once again thank you very much for returning.

If you want to have a romantic holiday with your partner I would highly recommend coming here.

We enjoyed the whole experience right from the minute we arrived. The rooms were beyond expectations and the views breathtaking.

It's a home away from home, there is plenty to do and so much privacy as well. Its a great place to come and relax in the sun, have a romantic getaway or indulge your self in one of the best diving spots.

Friendly staff. Excellent villas, lovely, spaces and a kitchen, magic setup. great beach, great diving. My two children went diving and the diving staff had all the patience to teach and spend the day with us at the Ra island, well worth the visit. Rather sad to see the kontiki backpackers closed, what a lovey place, great beach , we enjoyed the whole day we were out there. The resort was an ideal place for our family to relax.Everybody enjoyed it so much we plan to revisit soon.
If you love diving or just want to relax this is the place. Staff are organised and move quickly to assist and organize thinks for you.

Room Tip: definitely the villas.

Bula Vinaka,

Thank you very much for your review of Volivoli Beach resort. The Vilas or "Studio Vale's" are perfectly set up for a family of four or simply a couple looking for a lovely room with spectacular 180degree ocean views.

I will be sure to pass on your comments to our dive team especially Pola who was your instructor.

We look forward to hopefully welcoming you back again soon.

Kind regards

We arrived in the early afternoon to book a night to stay, in the dorm, and were given our room numbers. There are no locks on the dorm doors, but you're provided with a spacious, lockable area (using your own lock) to stow your kit. We were told our beds would be made up shortly.

Exploring the area, we were impressed. The water views expand over 180 degrees, and the resort is built on a hill, so there are plenty of viewing areas. The beach has light coloured sand, and lounge chairs are provided. There's a reasonable amount of sand at low-tide, but almost zip at high-tide. Kayaks are free to use, though there's a daily snorkel and mask fee.

In the evening, we returned to our room to find our beds still without sheets. So much for an early night! At around 7:30pm, we requested our beds to be made. Informed they would be done shortly, and when we returned; they were.

While waiting for the beds, we decided to have dinner. The menu is at times confusing, and written with child-like grammar. Capitalisation is errant, timings are incorrect and spacing is scattered. Prices are fair and food was good.

It's a $20 deposit for a towel for dorm residents, which is fair, though the one I borrowed had a knockout stench. It was swapped easily.

At breakfast, after sitting down for 10 mins, we asked if we could order food at the bar. The answer was, that it's table service. After an additional 20 mins, we    left, annoyed and hungry.

The following evening, after excellent snorkeling for $50 FJD, we overheard the owner talking about tripadvisor. I informed him of my points I was entering to the website, and he was generally dismissive. He, Steve, also said that shortly there won't be dormitory accommodation available at the resort. I won't write what he also said to us, but it was of the insulting nature. On the other hand, Steve's elder son was appreciative of the feedback and professional.

In a nutshell, generally folks visit Fiji for the environment and friendly culture. This place is in an outstanding, picturesque location with great diving and facilities. The staff are friendly, but we seemed to have a nightmare run of bad service.

Two stars for the facilities and location, but the other part of the resort is the service, which was sub-par.

Bula Vinaka,

Thank you for your review. It is a shame that you felt that the service you received was not up to a high enough standard for you. We are always striving to maintain a high standard of service and I will personally follow this matter up.

It is true that you had a slightly longer wait than normal at breakfast time due to the fact that we had a large group of divers come in for breakfast before you arrived down. It is a priority for our staff to serve the divers first as they have a boat to catch in order to go diving daily.

As a teacher I see that it is very important for you to apply your trade where ever possible so thank you for pointing out the "child-like grammar" in our temporary menu's, After all that is what trip advisor is designed for...

Volivoli really does offer some fantastic snorkeling and I am glad that you enjoyed it.I must also thank you for pointing out the fact that you "Over heard" a private conversation with the owner of the resort who was out having a social drink at the time with some friends.

Thank you once again, feedback is very much welcomed and is essential to ensure that guests continue to enjoy their stay with us and return year after year to rejoin their Volivoli Family.

Kind regards

Nick Darling
