“Basic but beautiful”
Reviewed January 24, 2012

If you know what to expect here you will love Nananu. Macdonalds cottages are basic but comfortable. The electricity goes off from about 10pm-8am and then again during the day and there's only cold water in the shower. Neither of these things is a big deal though, although keeping food cold enough in the fridge is a challenge. Other than that the location is wonderful, it's quiet, beautiful and completely non-resortish. Food in the cafe is pretty good although having to order dinner before 2pm is a challenge if you're off doing things during the day. We Scuba dived and fished each day through Safari Lodge on the other side of the island (100 meter walk!) who were brilliant, we also ate with them a few times. There was a certain inflexibility regarding checkout and the boat back to the mainland so we organised a boat through Warren at Safari. If you want to be left alone to your own devices in a great location Macdonalds is very good for the price, don't expect five star service or facilities, but it's clean and adequate.

We took the three hour bus trip up from Nadi and purchased groceries along the way. A fifteen minute boat ride boat us to the jetty at MacDonalds. What a gorgeous spot! We stayed in one of the beach front cottages which had two bedrooms, small sitting area, kitchenette and bathroom. We made our own breakfast and lunch then had dinner at the restaurant where there was a choice of five or six different meals (all very tasty). The snorkeling was excellent both out in the bay (beautiful coral and lots of fish) and also on the other side of the island. We ended up staying an extra two days because we enjoyed our stay so much. The only downside was the power went out at 10 pm which was fine when the breeze was blowing through the cabin at night but a couple of nights an operational ceiling fan would have been nice. If you're looking for a peaceful, serene spot this is it. There are no roads, no souvenir shops, no hustle and bustle - it was just what we needed.

we stayed at stoney creek resort, see review, then macdonalds cottages sent us a van, we stopped en route for basic groceries but these are also avail on the island. after a 3 hour fascinating bus trip along the coast seeing villages, you catch a boat trip for 15mins to get to the island. its cheap, cheerful, clean and comfy, friendly and well managed. the food is fantastic. the snorkelling is very good, there's kayaks and kite and windsurfing ( some experience needed), fishing, walks, sunsets, views, very quiet and relaxing and very real fiji along the way. very family freindly , we loved it, so did our canadian mates, our kids are young teens, but well suited to younger kids.

Room Tip: the room near the cafe maybe noisier until say 9.30 when power goes off, the superior room is wonder...

Agree with everything in review by leeshar. We stayed 12 days in Beachfront Cottage no 2, which is right on the waterfront near the jetty and we loved every minute of it. At night we could hear the laping of the water and even though it was very hot we had the best sleep. The windows are all screened so the louvers can be left open without fear of being eaten alive by mosquitos. Before we left home Maxine (the owner) gave us great advice about what to bring with us if we wanted to self-cater and she arranged for our meat to be ordered and frozen into meal sized packs for us to collect in Lautoka. We also shopped for fruit and vege in Lautoka and after a week on the island we went over to Rakiraki for fresh supplies of fruit, vege and bread. We had several meals at the island cafe and could not fault any of them. If you are looking for resort style accommodation, swimming pool, cocktail bar, multiple restaurants, shopping mall and wall-to-wall loud and demanding tourists do everyone a favour and stay away, this is not the place for you.For us this was the best holiday for a long time. We will be back for sure.

Well, i have booked the superior bure 5 and have been accommodated in a lower class next to the restaurant in bure 1. Something was wrong with the toilette and we could change the next days. With this promise i paid the price for that. Meanwhile the owner left for a holiday and nothing happened. No worker fitted something, no apologies. The reception-lady left also to the mainland and only the cook remained, knowing nothing(or don’t want to know). The owner didn’t call us, if everything went correct. Great service!
If you want to cook, there are useful utensils. But if you need some fruits and vegetables, then you have the same problem to purchase them. The boat costs 60,- return pp(too much for 6km!), but the staff is going free!(You cant hop on). So you have to find a solution, or you pay a lot in the restaurant.
There is 1 single and 1 double kayak with 2 paddles only. Some of the bures have broken mosquito screens without repairing them. No mosquito nets inside. Generator off from 10pm to 8.45am and 2pm to 4:30pm(some days you have to remember them to switch on).
The island and beach is nice at low tide, but also dead corals ,a few fish and plenty of mangroves. To walk (around) could be difficult at high tide, as many private lodges built to the south have made their own wall to the sea. but not on the windy side.
And we waited for the change of the towels and linen pretty long. And still in this small resorts you can have some morons making noise at night. Nobody cares, so you have to help yourself.

I stayed here with a friend this past month, for four nights. We stayed in a "twin self contained room" (2 single beds, bathroom and kitchenette) attached to another place next door. This was one of the smaller-sized accomodations, but it was fine for us. We cooked all of our own scrumptious meals, having stocked up on provisions at the produce market and stores in Lautoka before going to the island. One could also shop at the open-air market at grocery stores in Rakiraki. There is only cold water for bathing. The room was clean when we arrived; daily service only included emptying garbage and changing the foot-rinse water outside our door. The cost for our four nights' lodging was more than reasonable - less than $25 U.S./person/night, plus boat transfer at about $10 each way. Well worth it!
It was unusually windy when we were there, on both sides of the island. This was great for the many windsurfers. Apparently the best time for snorkelers like us to visit is Sept-November, when the water temperature is warmer and the winds die down before the rains. However, I was disappointed to see very little live coral in our bay. Even on our boat trip out to "Rainbow Reef", I saw lots and lots of bleached and damaged coral. The MacDonalds staff seems to be blissfully unaware of this, or they choose not to acknowledge it.
Maxine, the owner, and her staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We met dozens of New Zealanders, many of whom had stayed here several times before.
I can highly recommend Macdonald's as a wonderful place to chill out, go for walks, swim right off shore, and snorkel if you have no expectations. If you are a snorkeling afficionado, look elsewhere. It's also good for windsurfers who like quiet nights.

And by the way, the spelling is Macdonalds, with an a and no apostrophe.

I love this place. Ideal get away from it all location. Fabulous beach and swimming. Great walks. Friendly, helpful staff. A home away from home. Cottages are clean, airy and well screened. Gardens are beautiful and well maintained. Main beach bure is a great place to meet other guests and have a home cooked meal. Best holiday ever and will be back for sure.
