We stayed at First landing for 3 days after a month in Australia on our way back to the UK. (should have been 4 but the flight was delayed for a day). We had our 11 month old daughter with us and werent sure what to expect. but wow, the staff were wonderful, they loved our daughter and even offer a baby sitting service if you fancy a day or night out. The food was excellent, but as others have said, a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. The beach front bure was beautifull. Clean and tidy, with plenty of fresh towels and replacement tea, coffee, etc. No TV, which, comming from a self confessed couch potato I found strange, but after 24 hrs never missed it!. There are plenty of organised activities to go on, and you can even adventure out on your own if you want, with buses and taxis a plenty. The pool was lovely and offered a drinks and food service. The only dissapointment was the beach, there isnt much of one, but if you want to go island hoppig you will be sure to find one. Met some fabulous other guests whilst we were there from all over the world, this place makes you just chill out. Oh, and you have to go to a Cava ceremony.Overall summary.....saving up to go back

Resort is quiet, secluded, central to towns yet with an island feel. Great staff, great food, very relaxing. Facilities are very adequate for the price. I would suggest reviewer from Sydney got a bad day as this is a beautiful spot.

One suggestion - be wary of the tour operators next door. Fun n Sun offer island hopping. However if it is wind (which is highly likely) they only take you to Bounty Island which is also accessible via ferry from the Marina next door.

A beautiful place with all the main land facilities and spot easily accessible.

We stay at the Fist Landing Resort for 2 1/2 days in April 06. The first day we arrived very early in the morning, we were shown to our bure and told our luggage would arrive shortly. We actually gave up waiting and went to collect ourselves from the reception to take to our room.

The more time you spend on the island of Fiji the more you will find that the locals have there own time, they will quite openly tell you this, which to us Westerners take some time to adjust to!

We took the catamaran out island hopping and snorkelling, which was just fantastic. We stopped off for a BBQ lunch on a gorgeous island. This trip made our holiday in Fiji as we got to see the picture postcard views of the beaches and other resorts in the area.

One night we ventured out to the local town, we were provided with a hotel taxi and asked to go to a Chinese restaurant, the taxi driver recommended a nice place and drove us there. We were quite shocked to see all the shops behind metal bars and lots of young men roaming around town, looking quite intimidating. Our taxi pulled up at the restaurant and a security guard opened the metal gate to the entrance of the main door. The food was fantastic and very cheap. On return, we called the hotel to ask the driver to return. The waiters told us not to leave until the driver returned. It was an exciting experience but not one that I would have done again as 2 girls together we felt a little uncomfortable with the surroundings.

On our last day we walked around to the harbour bar for a few beers and snack. It was cheaper and really nice to see the sun set over a different side of the resort.

Our experience was a pleasant one, the staff were friendly, but didn’t smile a great deal. The food was superb but expensive if you regard that the staff who work their get paid very poor. If you want bottles of water or ice creams during the day, go to the shop around at the marina at the back of the hotel. There isn’t anywhere to investigate around the hotel resort by foot, but the pool area is well stocked with furniture and a fantastic cool swimming pool with a waiter to take you food and drinks orders. And one last thing to comment on, the beach, sorry to say that its not really a beach, you will need to travel somewhere else to lay on a beach.

Arriving at First Landing at night-time you walk down a lit walkway into the resort that takes your breath away. A beautiful part of the mainland of Fiji. Yes there are oil storage facilities nearby, not something you think about once on the resort. The staff at First Landing are without doubt top notch. The true Fijian flavour of the resort is a bonus, nothing commercial and the secluded situation is beautiful. Make sue you get involved in the activities on offer: village tours, fish feeding, basket weaving, crab racing etc. All hosted by Jone, the most entertaining host!!! The restaurant and menu are great - evidenced by the full bookings every night. Also at the resort are Fun N Sun adventures who will take you fishing, snorkeling, island hopping, out on a catamaran etc and the local boys who go with you are the best - never have we laughed so much on a fishing trip.

There are several choices of accommodation on offer, beautiful villas with their own pool and spa, beachfront bures wth views of the sunset, and garden bures surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens.

Remember to spend some time at the pool - Kellys Pool Bar is a must - what a storyteller!!

Make sure you get out and have a good look around the area - the culture is fascinating and a lot of historcal events happened in the area - something worth checking out.

Here is a rundown of the problems/incidents we experienced at First Landing.

- No-one to great us on arrival at resort, we had to carry our own bags to reception
- Put into wrong room (no explanation given) a Garden Bure not a Beachfront Spa Bure
- No information supplied regarding the resort and it's facilities
- Room (Garden Bure) not cleaned or made up properly
- No Resort Directory in room(s)
- When we inquired about getting put into the correctly booked room we had to call twice as no-one got back to us
- Not moved to correct room till the next day and then had to wait for over an hour (after being told someone would be there soonest) to be shown to the correct room
- Reason given for being placed in Garden Bure was that the room we had booked was occupied
- Staff were unfriendly and inattentive i.e.. reception staff rolled eyes at us when we went in for the fourth time on our first day, the restaurant staff were disorganised and tardy even by Fiji Time standards
- No Room service or information regarding
- Room was smelly due to cat Urine on Sofa Pillows
- Toilet Paper not topped up
- Towel replacement erratic - some days there were no towels at all
- Could not accurately see beach from our "Beach Front Spa Bure" just a slice of water at high tide and lots of exposed dead reef at low tide
- Bed-side lights not working properly at first, not at all later on
- Noisy overflow drain in bathroom

One incidental item was that when we left Fiji, Airport security found a handful of screws in the side-pocket of our carry-on bag. They were not placed there by us, nor was there any evidence of them at the Sydney Security check-in on departure. We did find a similar screw placed on the table in our room on day 4 or 5 but thought nothing of it as there was quite a bit of construction going on at the resort during our stay and it might have been tracked in somehow. Admittedly the onus is on us to check our bags thoroughly but we did not expect to find anything amiss at any time so perhaps we were a bit lax in that respect. As we mentioned, this was an entirely incidental item (we hope)

All in all, the First Landing is definitely not a place we would ever stay at again. It almost managed to turn us of Fiji for good but we are going back this year after some very in-depth research and will post our results when we get back.

We read reviews that say you have to go to an outer island to experience "real Fiji." We had only three days and a 3:00 am arrival, so chose to stay at First Landing. We loved it. The bures were beautifullly done, but still felt like a bure. The food was great, and we enjoyed the live Fijian music. The staff was amazing...couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating. The setting was lovely and seemed miles away even though its close to the airport. If you have a week, I suppose I'd go to at least one island, but you can do that from First Landing as well. There are lots of day excursions you can take. We loved staying where the units were all spread out over several acres rather than a typical hotel.

We stayed at First Landing Resort in Feb for 3 weeks, and were quite happy with the facilities on offer. Admitted the beach is very poor, and anyone wanting to swim has to use the pool. The overall resort is perhaps not the luxury place one dreams of in Fiji, but the bures are quite large and clean, the beds comfortable, and the grounds of the hotel are well looked after. The only grouse is that the excursions run by the hotel are quite expensive, the cost of getting to the nearby towns by local bus service is very cheap, and much more enjoyable and totally safe. You can take the bus into Lautoka and Nadi from the main road, every 15 minutes or so.The drivers from the hotel will usually run you up there for about 5 dollars, and the bus fare less than a dollar. The bus service to Suva (the Capital) from Lautoka takes about 4 hours and a return fare is only about 25 fijian dollars. We went by the Queen's Road, and stayed overnight, and returned via the King's Road, which takes a little longer. However the scenery is quite spectacular and well worth the longer journey. As regards the food at First Landing, it is quite expensive and we found that the Marina next to the resort has a rather nice coffee shop (excellent milk shakes and iced coffee) and also a bar/ restaurant at the harbour entrance that serves excellent food at considerable cheaper prices than the hotel. We discovered this fact very early in our stay, and ate in the Marina most evenings. The staff in the bar are very friendly and we can highly recommend the food. There is also a general stores there and it has a good selection of goods, and a small library where you can swap your books. The entertainment staff at First Landing are really good, especially Jone, and the chance to go to his local village to the service at the church to hear the choir is a must.
